Healthy Eating Out in Stuart Florida

When you go out to eat, inevitably you’ve got to decide whether to eat healthy or indulge yourself. When I decide to go the healthy route, I look for a restaurant with fresh, preferably farm-to- table produce, fresh locally-caught fish, and a good view of the Indian or St. Lucie River.

Dolphin Bar and Grill

A reliable choice is Dolphin Bar, located on Indian River Drive in Sewall’s Point. Fresh fish on the menu every day, prepared to order as a lunch sandwich portion or an entrée. Local produce gives you the option of a great side salad or a full salad with your choice of protein for an up charge. The bar and outdoor patio sit right on the Indian River, where you can watch the local pelicans diving for mullet.

The Gafford, Downtown Stuart

My favorite stop before a concert at the Lyric Theater, the Gafford has some great health options. When I’m avoiding carbs, I like the grilled avocado with siracha to start. During happy hour, I like the tuna tartare on wantons with wasabi cream. The bar has a great vibe from 5:30–9pm, with a good local crowd year round. For dinner, I love their barbequed salmon with wild rice pilaf. It’s a no guilt option. Taylor Wilson, the chef and son of the owners, Rick and Elizabeth Wilson, is constantly trying new menu items. He sources most of his ingredients from local and regional farms, making me feel good about eating here often.

The Osceola Cafe

Just two blocks from my office, I like the great variety of health options I find at Osceola Café. There are always innovative wraps when I don’t go for my standby, the pear and walnut salad with blackened chicken added. When I’m not in the mood for walnuts, I like their quiche of the day with a side garden salad. And when I’ve been good enough on my entrée selection, I’ll splurge on their key lime pie with fresh whipped cream. The Café hosts a casual night crowd, with live local musicians bringing their own atmosphere. After an early show at the Lyric, I like to drop by Osceola Café with my wife for a good glass of pinot noir by the glass.
