Paddling and Fishing on the Treasure Coast
Stick to the Indian River for recreational water sports. The St Lucie River is not reliably clean and safe for swimming.
You’ll get a great upper body workout if you spend the afternoon paddling the Indian River. A good outing is to paddle north from Indian Riverside Park, past the US Sailing Center, under the Jensen Beach Bridge and dock for lunch at Conchy Joe’s. Or, paddle south past the spectacular waterfront homes, under the bridge to Hutchinson Island, and pull out at the Sewall’s Point park. From there, throw on a shirt, cross the street, and grab a cocktail and fish dip appetizer at the Prawnbroker.
Stuart is the Sailfish Capital of the World, according to fishing journalists. It’s not uncommon during the December- March season for local captains to catch and release 10 sailfish. For out of town visitors, this is a great way to make a memory. But keep in mind, Winter in Florida is when we get the choppiest seas, so bring the Dramamine or take a bucket!
