Really big news: Craig Newmark Philanthropies is providing a 2X match on DonorsChoose classroom projects that serve military communities.
The grant will also support an innovative new tool on the DonorsChoose platform to ensure that donors, teachers, and site visitors can search for (and fund) classroom projects at the following schools:
Hey, the goal of the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF), if you’re not familiar with us, is to create long-lasting, positive outcomes for post-9/11 impacted veterans, service members and their families. We’ve joined forces with the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation to raise funds to support veterans through their #Give2Veterans campaign, which runs until September 30th.
For each social post or follow on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram that includes the hashtag #Give2Veterans and the handles @CohenGive or @Stand4Heros, the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation will donate $1 to BWF, with a maximum donation of $500,000. …
Hey, I’m speaking at the 6th annual SHE Summit this October in NYC. The Summit’s a global leadership event providing personal and professional transformation for change-agents invested in #genderequality.
With the mission to inspire thousands of influencers to lead change in the world, S.H.E. Summit will convene 50+ thought leaders and movement drivers on its global stage.
The theme and hashtag this year is #HowWeRise to promote the conference goal: inspire people to rise as a new breed of leaders in creating a better world, become greater change agents for gender equality in and outside their organizations, and lead their “whole lives” well towards 2030. The sessions will provide them with the stories, strategies and solutions to do so.
Voting is the core of democracy, and not only that: it’s also a way to thank veterans, active-duty, and their families for their service. That being said, I work with groups who are protecting Americans’ right to vote. The Brennan Center for Justice is is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice.
Recently they updated me on the work they’re doing…
Protecting voting rights in the courts: The Brennan Center and co-counsel won another victory in their longstanding federal lawsuit challenging Texas’s voter ID law. In 2013, Texas implemented a restrictive…
There are so many veterans in the US, and never enough support. Though, there are good orgs who are really serious about getting stuff done. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is fighting hard for the often invisible veterans: Women. #SheWhoBorneTheBattle is IAVA’s campaign to fully recognize and improve services for women veterans. The Craig Newmark Foundation’s helping to support that effort through a $500,000 grant.
Not only do women vets encounter barriers to care and benefits, they do so in a culture that often does not accept them or fully recognize them as veterans. Improving access to…
[This guest blog post was won in support of the Bob Woodruff Foundation.]
Above the din of the crowd surrounding the red carpet, the clicking sounds subtly announced the explosions that were glittering camera flashes bombarding me. The lights were everywhere, reminiscent of the stars in the American flag. They say one cannot see the stars at night in New York City like one can in the countryside where I grew up, but I beg to differ. Gotham just commands a variant type.

DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) really targets the cycle of hunger and poverty in an effort to throw a wrench into the vicious spiral. Each of their ventures creates opportunities for meaningful careers, access to healthy food, and tests innovative solutions to systemic failures.
But when we break it down, what does that really mean?
DC Central Kitchen prepares adults with high barriers to employment for culinary careers in sustainable, living wage jobs. The point is to target the root cause of hunger by offering pathways out of poverty.
They’re committed to extending DCCK’s impact throughout the food system by:
Folks, can you take this anonymous survey about workplace culture in the tech and startup sectors?
This is important work. The survey takes a few moments. Do me a favor and take it, then share it. There’s just not enough data on this topic. Thanks!
Hey, folks — big news: we just raised a total of $290,644 for America’s heroes, including the $50K that the Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund donated to the orgs.
This is our 5th year hosting the American Heroes Charity Challenge on CrowdRise in an effort to raise as much money and awareness as possible for organizations benefiting America’s heroes and their families, and I think it’s working.
How much the families of folks risking their lives have sacrificed often goes unnoticed, and that’s not right.
The thing is, I figure that service members, emergency responders, vets, and milfams all risk a…
Okay, sure, as a people we’re forgetting how much support and respect that veterans have earned.
We’ve never really realized how much their families have sacrificed; how they serve at home in often difficult circumstances.
We also tend to forget how much respect and support teachers deserve and how little we support them.
So, I figure a serious way to show my support is a new effort that DonorsChoose and I announce today: a year-long effort where you can help support military kids, families, vets, and active service members.
Here are the details from DonorsChoose, but in short, you can…
