Hi, my name is Jenna Crampsey and I am from New Hampshire. I am the oldest of four siblings, one of which is my youngest sister who is adopted from China. . I’m majoring in Communication Studies with a Design minor. I decided on communications because I have always been social and loved the idea of using speech and conversation in on different platforms to influence people and be part of my job. Ideally I would love to go into something having to do with travel after school since that is a passion of mine.
“The media” is a broad term especially in this day and age. However, I think the best way to explain it, at least by my understanding is that the media is a way of conveying information to large amounts of people on some sort of public platform. This could mean the news, social media such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook, or even just movies and radio. As far as the media’s role in society is concerned it grows by the minute. More and more, people are plugged in to a representation of reality than reality itself. And this sudden exponential growth in media can be seen in the contrast between the older generations and the younger generations alive today. Adults born in the 30s and 40s are far less involved with media than children born past 2000. This steady increase of media likely will not stop or slow down any time soon as new technology continues to make it easier to be connected. This is something that can be amazing. Having the ability to live stream the news on our smartphones or check what our childhood best friend is doing for the weekend while we are in line at the grocery store is a luxury that older generations never had at our age. However, when used irresponsibly such access to the media can certainly be destructive, causing consequences older generations also never had to deal with.
