Intro

Writing for me has always been a task. I don’t believe I would ever write a paper/ book for fun. Writing is a hard task for me as I find it hard to get some of my ideas across. Even now as I’m typing this intro, I’m not sure as to how I should conclude. I guess I will end on the note that my best writing is in poetry, since its the most calm form of writing for me.

Cover Letter

Dear Hiring Manager,

I saw your ad on Craigslist, and would like to apply for the open position as a record producer. Music has been my life, and I believe I have the beats to appeal to many kinds of artists. I’m also very good at multitasking and get tasks done proficiently and quickly. I do have previous work experience from working at the Queens Community House. At this facility I had to work with my colleagues a lot so I am very proficient with teamwork. My coworkers can vouch for me and say that I had passion and ambition in every task assigned to me. Having to work with people with people that don’t have that ambition is not an easy task. At times I would have to do my coworkers task and mine at the same time. this is just a small sample of how ambitious I am in the work environment. I’m available weekdays and I look forward to hearing back from you about the position.

Thank You,
Khristian Crawford

I don’t think I’d get called for an interview. My cover letter sounds more for a office job than it does for a record producing position. I should have put more traits of a producer in my cover letter, and had more personality. I sounded too serious and spoke more about how ambitious I am than my actual ability with music.

Classmate cover letter

I find it smart that you mentioned the great experience that you have with the business and how you frequent it a lot. From reading this, I could see how much you desired to get the job. You seem like you would be a great fit for the position as a sales associate as you have that patience and ability to multitask which I believe are key traits for that position. I believe you should talk more about what sets yourself apart from the rest of applicants though as many applicants would have these same traits. Overall, I believe you would be hired with this cover letter.

First Day On The Job

I got the job at the record company and I officially am a professional producer. The job is great so far, and it’s something I can see myself enjoying to do on a daily basis. I met two types of people on just the first day. People with great talent that sound great in the studio and people who think they sound great. The job seems like it will be coming with some stress from some clients but many jobs do. As a whole though, I think I am going to love this job.

John Jay Review

I’m a freshman majoring in criminal justice and attending John Jay College. While not being my first or second choice, my time here at John Jay has been cool. The environment in the main building/ new building is very chill. There are seating areas on almost every floor for student to relax and/ or get work done. There are two other buildings for John Jay that I have experienced. The library in Haaren Hall is not the biggest I’ve seen from a college but it still offers a wide variety for research or personal reading. The other building being North Hall is a completely different experience from the new building. This building has some classrooms with no windows, and it can either make u feel hostage or make a class more boring. I never knew how much of a difference windows can make until I took a couple classses in this building. Majority of the professors I’ve had are great. Of course there were one or two whose classes I hated going to but they still taught well...I guess. Overall, John Jay is a nice school and I would recommend it.

Atmosphere Exercise

Giving a refreshing effect after walking in the door, I noticed its better with the lights off (haha). Drenching the room in just pure sunlight instead of light from the bulb, mixed with pure silence gives the room more of a meditative mood. Its more peaceful. I have yet to see a more relaxing room in John Jay as sunlight reflects off these white and yellow walls.

Restaurant Review

Upscale McDonalds?

After three hours of playing basketball with some friends, we decided we wanted to get something to eat. After changing our minds several times on what we wanted, we settled for the McDonald’s around the corner from my house. We drove their from Wendy’s after changing our mind from seeing the long line inside and out. We were going to use the drive-thru for McDonalds till we saw the line backed up into the street causing traffic. Even though we didn’t experience this, its worth noting that this McDonalds when busy enough, has a worker that will begin walking out past the line and begin taking orders from the middle cars to the back to speed up the process.

After seeing the long drive-thru line we decided to walk in. On the outside it has panelling on the sides and large windows. We walked into a McDonalds with cushion topped stools with bar top tables along with the traditional restaurant seating. We walked in and all we could smell was straight up french fries being fried. If you have never walked into a McDonalds with this heavenly aroma, you have not experienced life fully yet. We walked into another line but it was not as bad as Wendy’s.

What we heard was the sounds of workers talking to each other, fries being fried, the four TV’s in the restaurant and the low babbling of at least forty people in the restaurant. While waiting on the line we chatted to each other about what we would get. I asked one of my friends what he was getting and he said he was getting a medium fries with four nuggets, a cheeseburger, a HI-C, and a McFlurry. My other friend was more simple and decided he wanted a Big Mac, a sprite, and a medium fries. I decided I wanted to get just a large fries, a chicken sandwich, and a medium sprite.

It was soon our turn to order and I ordered first. What I was given after ordering and telling her “to stay” was a number that read “5”. My friends and I were confused as we had never experienced this in a McDonalds. She told me that my order would be brought over to me. This just changed the game. I have never been in a fast food restaurant that had a waitress.

I sat down at a table with a view of one of the four televisions and waited for my friends who also got numbers but theirs read “6” and “7”. The channel was on CNN and they were talking about something with the presidential nominee, Donald Trump. We obviously weren’t interested as we scrolled through snaps on snapchat. After about 7 minutes our food began to come. Our waitress was cute, and we had a convo about her, basketball, and snapchat as we ate.

As we were beginning to finish, one of my friends started going on about how good McDonalds (specifically) HI-C drink is and my other friend had never tried it. So this was made into a big deal. Then I saw him eating a McFlurry and asked “how does that taste?” And this was made into a bigger deal as I was told I had to try one on that day. So my friend went to try the HI-C as I tried the McFlurry. We had different experiences as my friend hated the HI-C while I was enjoying the McFlurry. It had the right amount of crushed up Oreos mixed into vanilla ice cream, and tasted great.

To conclude, this McDonalds experience was the most significant experience I have had at a fast food restaurant. I give this McDonald’s a 4/5. They have long lines for the drive thru as well as inside. The line on the inside although bearable, could have been shorter if they had just opened up the other two cash registers. Even though the line was long, our food still came in a timely manner of less than ten minutes after ordering a lot of food. Therefore, it still maintains the reality that it is in fact still a fast food restaurant. The food was hot unlike other McDonald’s that would give just warm fries. My friends and I all enjoyed our meals and I recommend this McDonalds to anyone not in a rush.

First off, let me begin by saying that I highly recommend McDonald’s over all the other fast food restaurants. McDonalds is pretty much the face of fast food. They have the most restaurants across the country and the most recognized symbol. When it comes to the kids, majority of kids will get excited for McDonald’s over places like Wendy’s or Burger King. They call their kids meal the Happy Meal, that alone should tell you something

They were hot like they just came out the frier. Each one I ate had the perfect amount of salt, and left some salt on my fingertips. They have the best fries I have ever had at any restaurant. One restaurant that does come close however is Popeyes with their “cajun fries”. After my fries, I had my chicken sandwich which was okay. I have had better burgers and this chicken sandwhich topped with lettuce and mayo was nothing to scream about. And I was able to wash all of my food down with the lemon-lime blend in my cold sprite, that sparkled from my throat to my stomach as I drank.

Raisin Meditation

While trying to pick up the sticky raisin it sticks on to the other raisins holding on for dear life. You can feel the wrinkles all around the body of the raisin. Hard on the outside, yet soft and chewy on the inside. They feel so dry in the hand actually very sweet to taste.

Notes for Argument Essay

1. McDonalds has the best fries

2. Kanye West is the greatest artist of this century

3. The world should have less kids to stop overpopulation

4. Music can make you live longer

5. Taylor Swift is overrated

I ended up picking my second topic because it’s the one I agree with most and have the most information about.

Short Argument from a point I disagree with

Ecstasy should be legal. Feelings of love, empathy, and compassion for one’s self and others are what you get from a molly high. What other drug can do this for you. Sure cocaine can get you hyped up but when it comes to parties, ecstasy is the way to go. A party isn’t a party without molly.

1st Draft of argument Essay

Born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Kanye West is arguably one ofthe greatest hip-hop artists today. The majority of awards in music don’t come easily. Artistswork hard to get their work to the top. West is no stranger to this as he has 21 Grammy Awards. He is tied with fellow label mate Jay-Z to have the most Grammys amongst rappers. West istruly a legend, and I did not want it go unnoticed how my favorite artist has influenced hip hop.

According to Donda West’s Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar, as a child West was very artistic. He made his own toys and began drawing at the age of three. His mother said that he would not draw stick figures but would draw actual people. In kindergarten his teachers claimed he was academically gifted but felt he needed help socially. They felt he needed help socially due to the fact that he was “slightly self-absorbed” and “didn’t work well with others”. Claims like these are still made about West today.

West was very artistic at a young age, and this could have led to his great artistic ideas in various areas of hip hop. West started rapping in third grade. Around this time he was also interested in designing video games. His mother bought him the necessary design programs and West remembers to this day especially liking the program that was responsible for sound. His mother said he was not a bad kid and she never had to worry where he was because “he was sitting right there in front that keyboard”.

Once West entered high school, he was consumed with music. At fourteen West got his first sampling keyboard and created his first beat. He knew that if he wanted to be a rapper he would need beats, so he created beats for himself. He got a mentor named “No I.D.” thanks to his mothers connection to No ID’s mother. In No ID’s studio, West absorbed all the techniques and tutorials of No ID.

After high school, West decided to go to college. He attended Chicago State University and majored in English until he was 20 and dropped out. West continued making beats and recorded his song “Through the Wire” (which sampled Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire”) after his mouth was wired shut after his near-fatal car accident in 2002. People weren’t used to West’s style of music, and they loved it because it was a fresh and new sound. He sampled soul music and brought soul back to music around this time.

One way Kanye West has influenced hip hop is how he bridged the gap between conscious rap and gangster rap. Conscious rap challenges the dominant cultural, political, philosophical, and economic consensus while gangster rap is rapping about the “thug” or “gangsta” lifestyle. According to website “Pigeons and Planes” hip hop did not always sound the way it does today with so much soul. “Kanye’s use of sampling from the soul genre brought a new sound to hip hop and changed it forever”. With his use of sampling to create something beautiful that we can sometimes sing along to, we see truly how great of an artist hereally is.

Another way West has influenced hip hop is the art of his album covers. His album covers aren’t ordinary and has sometimes created controversy. Website MTV.com stated, “one of the most visual markers of [Kanye’s] progress shows on up on album covers.” West has basically raised the bar in hip hop album covers with his artistic views. He puts time into every aspect of his albums sometimes calling on fashion designers to design his covers. According to MTV, he has called on various fashion designers to do several albums. Among them is Givenchy who designed West’s collab album with Jay-Z, Watch The Throne. A third way West has influenced hip hop is the way he helped morph auto tune into an art. What is auto tune? Auto tune is a software that tunes your voice to how you would like it to sound.West’s album 808’s and Heartbreaks from 2008 was based around autotune as he played with it and mixed his voice in various ways. Years ago autotune was not as popular as it is today. West changed the game with auto tune which helped bring soul into his music. Rappers and many singers nowadays have been using and/ or trying to use autotune how West has or better to bring more soul into their songs. One notable artist is T-Pain who uses auto tune on nearly all of his songs. “Pigeons and Planes” say “[West] is constantly pushing the boundaries of the software, proving that you can still spit aggressive bars with it, give rappers an outlet for their melodic side through it, and use it live to complement any visionary streams of consciousness one might have.”

West’s music videos have also influenced hip hop. Since his first album he has been delivering visuals to his songs to give fans an experience and sometimes tell a story. One notable song that is known for his visuals is “Jesus Walks” off his The College Dropout. For this one song, West released three videos. “Pigeons and Planes” quoted West from his interview with Zane Lowe where West said: “What Michael Jackson did with music videos… there would be no Kanye West without Michael Jackson. […] I showed people that I understand how to make perfect. Dark Fantasy could be considered perfect.”

If not known for his music and artistic mind, West is also known for being very outspoken. In many of his rants he discusses his views on various parts of society. I personally love when rants about how important it is to follow your dream. He incorporates issues of society into his music, and does not bite his tongue on his views. For example his song “New Slaves” off of the album Yeezus presents the idea that people today in modern society are metaphorically “slaves” to money and material possessions. Pigeons and Planes say “Kanye has found a balance between educating and entertaining. He so often says things that many of us think but don’t say. While Kanye’s message can sometimes be marred in contradiction, he still manages to spark dialogues where they were lacking. What other rapper can get thousands of people to recite a song called “New Slaves,” word for word?”. With this we see the great influence he can have on his fans by not shying away from the truth. In his most recent speech on the Video Music Awards of 2015 presented by MTV, he announced that in 2020 he will be running for president of the United States.

Many people would argue and say that rapper Marshall “Eminem” Mathers has had a larger impact on hip hop than West. They would say so due to the fact that Eminem has influenced rappers such as Danny Brown, Kendrick Lamar, and rap group Odd Future. Another point they would bring up would be his sophisticated rhyming style is more complex than West’s rhyming style. These are valid points made but Eminem has not influenced as many artists as West, nor has he revolutionized the hip hop genre in such a big way like West has. Eminem may be a better rapper than West but as an artist, West is on a whole other level than Eminem.

To conclude, West has been an amazing influence on hip hop today and many of our favorite artists. West has done a lot for hip hop as well as music as a whole. West is my favorite artist out right now and I wanted to show why. I wanted to show what makes him such a great artist and the great influence he’s had not only on myself but many of our favorite artists making music today. He not only influences but actually inspires many of his fans with his strong speeches and rants. According to three sources, Kanye West has influenced hip hop by changing the game with his use of autotune and his use use of sampling to bring soul to hip hop as well as his artistic originality in his album covers and music videos, and Charles Holmes’ analysis on website, “Pigeons and Planes” was the most informative. “Pigeons and Planes” broke down all the ways West has impacted hip hop into pages and briefly explained each point.

He’d always tell his mother that he’s gonna be famous. His confidence is very influential. He showed that with hard work dedication and a set goal that your dream truly can come true. West recorded his song “Through the Wire” (which sampled Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire”) after his mouth was wired shut after his near-fatal car accident in 2002. He had the ambition and drive to still rap and make a song while his mouth was literally closed up. He basically shows not to let anything or anyone stop you from being great.

According to website “Pigeons and Planes” hip hop did not always sound the way it does today with so much soul. “Kanye’s use of sampling from the soul genre brought a new sound to hip hop and changed it forever”. With his use of sampling to create something beautiful that we can sometimes sing along to while in the shower, at the gym, after a breakup, etc, we see truly how great of an artist he really is. He has made music for any type of mood that you may be in.

Comment on Kionna Romans Candy Ode

“I feel this. Very good detailing. You had great use of metaphors and personification and really showed the detail of the Jolly Rancher and the struggle of trying to eat it. I really liked it”

Writing Process

I procrastinate a lot and usually end up saving my assignments till the last minute. I have saved some of the biggest assignments to do a day before they are due and my friends would begin to doubt me and tell me I would not finish where I would literally respond with “what’s my name though?”. I ask this because no matter what I always get shit done. I’m like the James Bond of writing. It’s a big assignment and I may not finish it perfectly but I get the job done.

I’m most comfortable when I’m in my room. I then hop in my bed. I would then have to turn off my phone sometimes because my group chat would continuously send messages and I’d be tempted to check them. I finally grab my laptop and immediately begin typing what comes to my head for my intro.

Thanksgiving: Family Dinner v. The family sinner

Every Thanksgiving we’d always have some people come over to our house. They’d be friends of my grandmother, family friends, or just family. This thanksgiving however, a cousin of mine named Breanna came to spend this special holiday with us for the first time. I didn’t really know this cousin, but I had seen her once or twice at family functions, and she would always be the loudest at any function. She came in with her boyfriend and hugged and greeted everyone.

The living room quickly got crowded as more and more people began to come. My cousins and I just decided to go in my room and play video games. We mainly played Mortal Kombat and they were all determined to beat me. Some of them got close to beating me but it just didn’t happen as I kicked their asses one by one with my two favorite characters, Skorpion and Kung Lao.

Anyway, as my mom and grandma were beginning to finish up the food the mouth watering smell of a custom made Thanksgiving supper begins to fill the air. Each room in the house begins to trap the aroma of this amazingly delightful thanksgiving smell. We all smell the food and decide to go downstairs. Brianna was drinking with my uncle and a few family friends prior to the feast.

So, its time to eat, and everyone goes into the kitchen to grab a plate. We all grab a plate and the food is setup buffet style around the kitchen. I grab what I usually get which is chicken, some rice, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, and some macaroni and cheese. I take mac and cheese serious. My mother knew how to make mac and cheese. I had tasted some mac and cheese where it would literally taste like plastic. You gotta put love in if you want a good mac and cheese. We all grab our food and sit at the long table.

We begin having light conversations, sharing some laughs and going around the table talking about what we’ve been doing with our lives. Mind you Brianna was drunk off her ass so when we got around to her she had a lot to say. She started off civil and began talking about her job and how she just bought a new car. Then my grandmother made the biggest mistake of that night and asked Brianna about her relationship with her boyfriend. She immediately began talking about the great sex that they’d been having the past couple of months and how her boyfriend liked to “experiment” with her a lot.

That situation ended up being a real disaster. I forgot to mention her mother was at the feast and you could say she was pretty much embarrassed herself at what her dauughter was sharing about her sex life. You can tell by the dissapointed expression on her face. Brianna’s discussion didnt get far as majority of everyone quickly rose up from their seats and left the table.

The food was good and no one felt like throwing it up on the floor. A couple minutes go by and I hear in the distance that shes pestering her boyfriend of eight months about marriage. He didnt like that and about 2 minutes later I saw him walk out the door and go outside to smoke a cigarette. He must have smoked a whole pack of cigarettes that night because he never did come back inside. I wouldn’t have came back either after that uncomfortable setting.

One of my cousins birthdays was the day of Thanksgiving so we ended up celebrating his birthday right there as my uncle brought out his birthday cake and we sung happy birthday to my now 7 year old cousin. My birthday also happened the week of Thanksgiving and my mother surprised me as she brung my second birthday cake out the fridge and immediately began singing happy birthday to me along with everyone else there. Everyone grabbed a slice from both cakes too end the night.

After everyone had both cakes they did their hugs and kisses and began to get in their vehicles. Breanna was a mess and waved bye while sleepy eyed. We never got a “bye”, “good night”, or “thank you” from her boyfriend though (who I recently found out broke up with Brianna due to that night).

Overall Thanksgiving 2015 was by far the funniest Thanksgiving for me. I don’t think anyone at the dinner will be able to forget Brianna that night. My whole view on my cousin has changed. The freak truly came out at night.

Ode to NY Street Food

Hopping off the B train and going up the busy staircase to Columbus circle, the first thing you are greeted with is a food cart. It’s placed smartly so we can quickly grab something to eat after that long hour and fifteen minute travel to school, but nah I’m not really hungry. I continue down W60th Street and theres another food cart. I begin to walk by but then the smell of a bacon egg and cheese starts calling me over. I had seen picture of it on the cart and it was basically waving at me a calling me over to the cart. The aroma of it latched on to me and pulled me on to the food cart line.
