I had this same thought a while ago, phrased a little differently. I realized that as white people “not racist” isn’t something we can -be.- that’s not the right verb. it’s something we have to -do.- every day. it’s not like all the programming we get from birth, implicit and explicit, is a lightswitch we can turn off with a decision, an announcement and the occasional Facebook share. can this be the first ever useful use of the word “mindfulness?” we have to be constantly vigilant for our own awfulness to make any progress toward taming it.
you’re more optimistic than I am that we can genuinely accomplish that, but somebody’s gotta be an optimist, god damn it.
