Cosmopolitan, convenient ‘science,’ and the perpetuation of the white = beauty myth

About a decade ago, I watched this documentary with John Cleese and Elizabeth Hurley called “The Human Face” and it was actually really funny (because John Cleese) but they discussed the Golden Ratio in the film. They then used the Golden Ratio to see if it worked on faces Americans find attractive. When they used it, they didn’t just plunk white faces into it (if I recall, they used Denzel Washington’s and Tyra Banks’); I really liked it when they showed a bunch of non-famous people from all over the world whose faces also fit. I think that may be the one and only time I’ve seen the Golden Ratio discussed in a way that says, “It’s not us-it seems the math holds” that wasn’t racist or colonialist.

A single golf clap? Or a long standing ovation?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
