Perhaps one clear way is to be open to forking. It is well worth watching Bryan Cantrill’s talks about illumOS to see that this does not need to be the death of the culture due to division and re-division: Instead one finds that those strongly held beliefs can exist in two parallel universes where they do not step on each others’ toes, and then they can eventually compromise and reconcile later. Culturally one can understand that this is also actually how really nasty movements keep themselves going; there are dozens of alt-right groups which constantly differ on whether they’re antisemitic or not, whether they’re racist or not — and the freedom of the alt-right movement for anyone to fork off a chunk of their audience according to one of these beliefs is precisely what makes the alt-right movement so robust.
