Build Your Well Before You’re Thirsty

I read the title of this blog in one of the many Seth Godin books I have purchased and it made me close the book and think, “What is the meaning behind that?” I reopened and began reading more, and from my interpretation this is what I have come to believe.

We all have dreams, aspirations, and goals we would like to accomplish before we die, but how many of us dedicate time to that goal each day of our lives? Do we have too much going on? Do we not have enough time? I know that it is tough. Consistency is one of the most painful habits to adapt in the beginning, but it pays out big time!

I remember when I was a child and my dream was to play major league baseball. I was always one of the best on any team I played for, and I couldn’t wait to start getting recruited from colleges in high school. In 9th grade I decided to move high schools. I came to the conclusion I would be much happier with a group of friends at a high school that wasn’t known for its athletics at all, rather then a high school that was known for it’s athletics and academics on top of that. I chose comfort and fun that day and it cost me my dream. I later went on to quit baseball before my 10th grade year because I enjoyed parties and friends more. I mean, who wouldn’t rather have a good time with friends then bust your ass on a practice field all weekend? I traded immediate comfort and a good time for hard work and discipline. Do you know what I have to show for all the parties I attended? Nothing. They didn’t even give me a medal for drinking the entire 30 pack that one night.

Our goals are destined to be hard, they wouldn’t be goals if we could just reach out and grab them. How we react when in the hunt for our accomplishments is ultimately going to tell us what kind of person we are and how our priorities are numbered.

If I want to build another online business I have to plan a year out. I have to continue to blog, day in and day out. I can’t rationalize and say I don’t need to today, or I’ll get to that tomorrow. Goals are obtained by consistently working towards them. It’s not always going to be fun and games, but the journey is well worth the destination.
