If you wish to remain in business then you have to take the security of your website very serious. You must do everything possible to protect it against cyber-attacks. Any slight flaw in the security of your system can be exploited by cyber criminals. You may be wondering why anybody will want to attack your site. The truth is not far-fetched.
The problem is that most times small business sites don’t usually have an IT specialist to protect their systems properly. Perhaps the cost of hiring such people is exorbitant for a start-up. Nevertheless you should never play with the security of your site because the success of your business depends on it. A website that suffers malicious attacks may break down. This can adversely affect your online presence and will definitely tell on the number of customers you have.
People get frustrated when their needs are not attended to; so you customers are bound to look elsewhere if they can’t reach you. Your business is bound to suffer when this happens. In some case they can infect you website or steal valuable information from you. Cyber criminals are the worst nightmares of any webmaster. However you can still help yourself in the absence of a web security specialist. We have taken time to put down some helpful security measures you can implement to improve the security of your site. Applying them will go a long way to prevent sudden cyber-attacks.

Look for solutions with vendors with a proven track record

Only use solutions provided by vendors who can be trusted. To be sure a potential provider is right for you, visit review sites and read comments made by other users. See if they have received any accolade in the past for their products and services.

Conduct security checks frequently

Depending on the provider, you can carry out a security check on your website to see if it is already infected. Make sure you do this often so as to discover if any malware may have infected your system. If you are lucky enough, your provider may offer free security checks, e.g. Virustotal.

Use stronger passwords for your logins

The use of password is probably the most implemented security measure in the internet world. Make sure you create passwords that will be hard to decode by anyone. Avoid passwords like 12345678 or ABCDEFGH because you will pay dearly for using them. Instead try something that is unfamiliar. For stronger passwords combine lower and upper case letters, numbers, and special characters e.g. Mcon12/$. It will take a miracle for someone else to discover something like that. If you feel you will forget such passwords then you can use something familiar but with a little modification. For instance you can create a password that combines your name and birthday. So if your name is John and you were born in May 1990, you can use something like JOhn90@$.

Consider encrypting your website

SSL certificate represents one of the most important ways to protect data transaction on your website. SSL is the short form of Secure Socket Layer and is used to describe a network protocol. This protocol is usually employed when it’s necessary to secure a data transmission. It works by encrypting the transferred data so that a cyber-criminal or any other unauthorized person will not be able to follow it. This technology is very useful for protecting private information about your customers e.g. passwords, bank details, email, etc.
