BRANDING IS ABOUT BECOMING “THE ONE”.
Ever wonder why alot of people, especially Nigerians have substituted the word noodles with “Indomie” or detergent with “Omo”?😞 I was curious about how this happened and I searched to discover a major marketing secret with my focus on Apple.
If we go down memory lane to your high school/secondary school or university days 🏢, you discover that out of the many teachers you had there was one unforgettable one that always crossed your mind first. There was something about that lecturer that made you like them and made them different right? This is an example of the subject matter in a relatable way.
For me it was my Film studies lecturer, Dr Lanre Amodu, who is now the Head of Department, Mass Communication at Covenant University. He was one lecturer that was and still is interested in knowing how I am doing and knew the trendy topics that the youth discussed about. This made me want to “sing his praises” when my friends were boasting about their favourite lecturers. He has an awesome blog which will inspire you: www.olanreamodu.com
Now back to product branding, I ask, what makes some products come first to your mind despite the competition? An example like Coke and Pepsi or Apple and Samsung (No shade intended 😉).
According blog.kissmetrics.com , two things that can make your product attain this “Unicorn” status are:
- Becoming first to market and
- Having a unique value that you bring that makes people wish your product was first.
I think about Apple’s Iphone and how it appeals to you in a way that other products may find hard to. From the slender look to its touch functions and how clear your instagram selfies come out. They have won alot of customers hearts by blowing our minds consistently.
You might think Apple will be having sleepless nights with competitors who are trying everything to substitute them. Apple remains focused, not setting its pricing based on competitors activities. According to Entrepreneur.com, Apple has a unique value proposition which no one has been able to emulate, which is “Beautiful products that work straight from the box”.

It will interest you to know that a simple formula with Apple products according to www.Entrepreneur.com is a “great user experience” + Cool features + “extensive applications” that put it in a product class by itself.
So you might ask, where do I start from? From my take away, I will suggest you first spot what your customers needs are and how you can meet those needs in a unique and memorable way that gives you a place of preference above your competitor.
