My problem with the movie is that it totally missed communicating the scale of the tragedy. I would never have guessed from the movie that 400,000 men had been trapped at Dunkirk and that some 80,000 of them never made it home. How many of those who did get off that beach were in those little civilian boats? That, in my mind, was the biggest story at Dunkirk and yet I’m left wondering how the British really pulled off the most amazing retreat of WWII. Yes, the personal struggles were interesting, but I learned almost nothing about Dunkirk from this movie.
