Getting started on X as a digital creator

Okay, I did it: After contemplating and preparing for about half a year, I officially started my journey as a digital creator of Notion templates on Monday last week. Specifically, I started posting on X because the platform has a vibrant Notion creator community. I aim to start the digital creator journey as a side hustle next to my university job.

As a doctor of Psychology and academic, I plan to focus my templates on science-backed methods to improve people’s lives, and another focus of mine will be templates tailored to the needs of people in academia. I haven’t released any template yet because I wanted to build a presence on X first. In this article, I will detail what I did and show you the numbers of my first week on X. I also had a surprising moment when looking at my X analytics for the first week, but more on this later.

The stats for my first week on X

Let us get to the nitty gritty details of this first week:

Over the last seven days, I have gained 20 Followers.

My posts from the last seven days earned 1,366 impressions in total.

I posted every day. I published only once on most days, except on Tuesday, when I published twice. I also replied to a few posts from others every day, but not more than five.

So what about these numbers?

I like these numbers because they show that my account has grown within the first seven days of posting. I have decided to hold myself only to my standards. Deeper, meaningful connections seem more important to me than just counting followers.

The “growth gurus” might say you should post ten times a day and reply to 100 posts by others, but this doesn’t seem sustainable. I am a very busy person, and I am here to play the long game.

The most surprising data point

The post from my first day, which I also pinned to my profile, got the most engagements. This does not strike me much because the post has been there more time than all my other posts, and as my pinned post, it naturally gets more attention:

What surprised me was how this post from yesterday seemed to resonate with the community:

The funny thing is that I did not know what to post about yesterday, but I wanted to stick to my daily posting routine. Also, I was in a rural area with an unstable internet connection, so I preferred to write something short and sweet. Finally, I just posted it, expecting nothing. Surprisingly, it was the post with the second-highest number of engagements after my pinned post.

What I have learned and what’s up next

Based on yesterday’s surprising data point, I will monitor which factors contribute to my posts’ performance and be more receptive to the audience’s needs. I am also planning to launch my first template this week. It’s a nice freebie from the mental health field, and I am excited to take this next step. I will continue building in public and sharing my progress, so I hope you stay tuned!

If you liked my story, consider following me here and on X (https://twitter.com/creatorschmidt) to get updates on my creator journey! And if you are also just starting out as a digital creator, let me know in the comments. Until next time!
