Hrishikesh Kanitkar

Hrishikesh Kanitkar is a name etched in the memories of Indian cricket fans for his match-winning boundary against Pakistan in the final of the 1998 Independence Cup. However, Kanitkar was much more than just that one boundary. Kanitkar has been a true master of the game.

Despite losing his place in India’s National team in 2000, Kanitkar persevered & continued to play in the domestic circuit till 2015 and emerged as one of the highly respected players of domestic cricket. He ended his career as one of the only few batsmen to have scored 8000-plus runs in the Ranji Trophy. His 28 Ranji centuries are also the joint fourth-highest in the tournament’s history. Under his leadership, Rajasthan made history by clinching their maiden and consecutive Ranji Trophy titles in the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons.

Kanitkar was known for his ability to anchor the innings and play according to the situation. His consistency and temperament made him a valuable asset to the team. Although he may not have had a very ‘successful’ career representing India, it cannot be denied that his mastery of the game was evident.

Apart from his batting, Kanitkar was also a handy off-spinner and a brilliant fielder. He often contributed with his bowling and fielding, providing crucial breakthroughs and saving valuable runs for the team.

Kanitkar’s contribution to Indian cricket goes beyond just that one boundary. He was a reliable and dependable player who always put the team’s interests first. His dedication and commitment to the game have earned him a special place in the hearts of Indian cricket fans.
