In 2015, a cat named Masha saved the life of a newborn baby abandoned by its mother inside a box left on the cold streets of Russia.

The long-haired tabby cat heard the baby making noise and climbed inside, lying beside the infant. Police said the baby had been outside for a couple of hours by that point, and Masha’s warmth kept her alive while her persistent loud meows alerted humans to the incident.

Masha’s mothering instincts kicked in and she protected the baby.

Obrinsk city resident Irina Lavrova heard the cat's loud meows and checked out the box. She told media outlets that the cat was friendly, although she was shocked to see her lying beside the baby.

The baby was rushed to a local hospital and determined to be healthy.

Masha was well-known in the community. She was the neighborhood cat looked after by local residents before the incident. After saving the baby’s life, Masha became the feline hero of the community.
