David Shaw planned to dive into Boesmansgat (known as Bushman’s Hole in English) in South Africa, retrieve the body of a diver who died in its darkness 10 years earlier, and then return home to his family. Instead, the experienced extreme thrill seeker lost his life deep in the ocean water alongside the body of the man he planned to rescue. Shaw captured his own death on his helmet camera.

Deon Dreyer drown in Bushman’s Hole on December 17, 1994, during a practice dive with a group assembled by diving expert Nuno Gomes. The team had a technical dive scheduled later that same week. Deon was a young 20-year-old at the time of his death.

Despite his young age, Dreyer had completed more than 200 successful dives when Gomes asked him to join him and the South Africa Cave Diving Association over the Christmas holiday. Honored that Gomes picked him to join the group, he excitedly accepted the offer.
