This. I rent but am preparing to buy. I don’t have children (yet). I have never thought twice about my property taxes going to support public schools. I am not American, although I suspect there are many Americans who think this: I would be happy to pay much higher taxes if it meant *everyone* had inexpensive access to good health care, living wages, appropriate child and eldercare, and affordable education. This is, IME, what it means to be liberal.

Actually, Meghan Nesmith, it would be interesting to know who the Billfold’s readership is: urban or rural, nationality, liberal or conservative, etc.
