Terravita’s “The Fallen” Tour Comes Home

It will be a homecoming this upcoming Friday as dubstep duo Terravita returns to their roots in Massachusetts to blow the roof off The Middle East in Cambridge. “It’s always great (coming back to MA)! I still have a lot of friends and family there,” Jon Spero of Terravita said. “My family all lives in Worcester, so I usually come in for the week before and hit all my favorite spots in Worcester and Boston. It will always be home to me.”

Jon and musical partner Chris Barlow came from modest beginnings in New England, working as a bartender (Jon) and a used car salesman (Chris) before getting into music, “this is not a joke,” Jon adds. Though working together now, that was not always the case, “We both did things on our own until around 2003, 2004ish? I was MCing for whoever would let me and Chris was just DJing with another MC.” In fact, Jon’s first gig was at the historic Roseland Ballroom in New York City. “I played for three people in a room in the basement, I’m pretty sure (it) was a janitorial closet.”

Fast forward and Terravita is born, leading to the emergence of Hot Pink Dolerean. “Hot Pink came out of our Terravita release schedule being backed up so we decided to switch gears and start something new, that’s what we were into at the time.” Will there ever be a Hot Pink Dolerean reunion? “I doubt you’ll ever see HPD again,” Jon replied, “It was really a moment in time and I don’t think it would translate to now. Don’t be surprised if you see some 128 stuff from Terravita though.”

Currently, Terravita has released The Fallen EP and is in the midst of a nationwide tour. “We’re really happy with the final outcome,” Jon speaking of the EP, “We’re taking some chances and doing some different things and we’ve been really enjoying the process. The response from everyone has been great so we’re really happy with how everything is going.” When asked of the tour Jon replied, “So far it’s been amazing! The crowds have been great and we couldn’t be more excited for the rest of the tour.”

Lightning Round Questions:

Crush: What artists would you most like to collaborate or perform with?
Jon: Oh man there are so many. If I had to pick a top 5 it would be: Atmosphere, FKA Twig, Born of Osiris, Ed Sheeran, Run the Jewels.

Crush: Ed Sheeran? He’s not usually associated with heavy bass.
Jon: Ed Sheeran is, in my opinion, one of the most talented artists out right now. I think we could make something really dope. Who knows how it would end up. Whenever I think of collabs I usually think about stuff that will most likely never happen (laughs).

Crush: Where do you see Terravita in 10 years? 20 years?
Jon: Who knows? Time will tell. I’ll probably be somewhere else in the world doing something completely different. What will be? I’ll let you know in ten or twenty years.

Crush: On the wake of Prince’s passing, do you have a favorite Prince song?
Jon: Cliche, but “Purple Rain” will always be my favorite song by Prince. “I Wanna Be Your Lover” would be a close second. I’m also a huge fan of his song writing in general. Specifically the stuff he wrote for Sheila E. and Sinead O’ Conner. RIP to a legend.

Terravita can be seen this Friday, April 29th, at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased here.
