What are pawns, how will they be used?

To engage with the various game mechanics in Sanctum, players require “pawns” — adventurers who serve as their mercenaries. Pawns can assume one of three roles: Mage, Archer, or Warrior. Each class boasts its own distinctive abilities and gameplay dynamics, along with specific strengths, weaknesses, and predispositions for certain quests. Upon release, pawns will be able to participate in turn-based combat and embark on idle quests. Possessing a pawn is essential for players to access and interact with the economy of Sanctum

Every pawn is uniquely generated, featuring a distinct name, rarity level, stat allocation, and a set of traits (visible on the right of the screenshot). As can also be seen above, pawns have 6 equipment slots, 6 spell slots, and 2 item (or consumable) slots.

As you employ your pawns in various activities, they will level up, allowing you to acquire and equip them with gear to boost their capabilities. Furthermore, pawns level up by taking part in quests or engaging in combat, and each level gained awards a stat point. Players have the freedom to distribute these stat points among the six core attributes as they see fit.

Strength: The measure of the pawn’s physical capabilities, affecting their ability to carry out physically demanding tasks.

Constitution: The durability and stamina of the pawn, enhancing their overall health and ability to withstand damage.

Intelligence: The mental aptitude of the pawn, reflecting their capacity for problem-solving, learning, and understanding complex concepts.

Dexterity: The agility and nimbleness of the pawn, influencing their ability to perform tasks requiring precision, balance, and quick reactions.

Spirit: The potency of the pawn’s inner essence, amplifying the effectiveness of their magical abilities and spells.

Charisma: The allure and leadership skills of the pawn, shaping their ability to influence others and successfully navigate social interactions.

These stats will directly affect gameplay, increasing effects of certain abilities, and increasing changes to pass quests that demand a particular aptitude from the participating pawns.

How are pawns created?

Recruitment of pawns will always be available, but it will be an elastic supply — increasing in price as supply increases, and decreasing as the supply decreases. The quality (rarity) of the pawns recruited will have an upper limit, making it suitable for assembling an initial team but not for perfecting your ultimate lineup. This encourages players to use the second method for obtaining pawns: crafting.

By sacrificing two pawns, and paying a set fee, players can create one superior pawn. Adding various reagents to the mix allows for further enhancement and control over the crafting outcome. This dual-system approach aims to both control the supply of pawns and create inherent value for pawns as essential crafting components.

The crafting system will be expanded on in upcoming updates, this should serve as just a basic primer. Items will follow a similar philosophy.
