Ledger Nano S - restore your device
This is a quick guide to restore your Ledger Nano S using the recovery passphrase. For more information about the Ledger Nano S, read my Beginner’s Guide.
This guide will show you step-by-step how to restore your Ledger Nano S using the recovery passphrase. If you want to set up your Ledger Nano S as a new device, read my Ledger Nano S- setting up a new device guide!
Restoring, but also duplicating!
Using the restore function of the Ledger Nano S you can restore a new/different device to the same contents as a lost, damaged or stolen device. However, as the device will be configured using your unique 24 word recovery passphrase it is also perfectly possible to replicate your original device. Imagine storing an additional device in a different location for increased security.
Do NOT set up as a new device
Connect your Ledger Nano S to a pc or laptop using the USB cable. When asked if the device must be set up as a new device, select NO by pressing the left button (X).
Choose a PIN
Again choosing a PIN is mandatory. However, the PIN does not need to be identical as the previous configuration. Only the actual passphrase (24 words) will be identical.
Recovery Passphrase
Next the device will ask to selec the amount of words (12–24–18), which for Ledger Nano always is 24, and to enter the passphrase. Please be aware that this is a VERY lengthy process, as each of the 24 words on your Recovery Passphrase need be typed in manually, in the same way as you would enter your PIN.
Finally, you're done!
After correctly entering the 24th word of your Recovery Passphrase, the device will notify you of its successful configuration.
