Hundreds of millions of dollars in crypto currency is being traded daily. What currencies are being exchanged? Which coins have the largest volumes and what countries are shopping?

We’ll answer these questions by looking at transaction volumes from one day: 2017–08–22 (August 22nd, 2017).

~5 Billion $$ Exchanged

The dataset has 109 distinct crypto currencies:

Total exchange volume, if converted to US dollars, is 4.75 billion💰.

I continue to convert things into USD so as to better compare coins and currencies below. This put’s everything into relative terms that we’re all familiar with.

Most Traded Coins

Bitcoin, Ripple, Bitcoin Cash. Ethereum lagging in 4th spot.

Most Traded Currencies (i.e. Including USD, JPY, …)

The South Korean Won edges out Bitcoin, the US dollar, and Japanese yen.

Coin Segments by Currency

The coins are sorted by order of global volume. Where we see short bars followed by longer ones, it can be concluded that those coins (the short bars) are making up larger percentages of the volume for other currencies.

If you want to see this plot for a specific currency, let me know in the comments and I will update the post.

USD Volume per Coin

The top results are Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The long tail of that chart above is quite interesting. It’s best revealed with a logarithmic scale.

South Korean won Volume per Coin

Total KRW volume exceeded USA by ~400 million. As seen below, this trading is vastly different, with Bitcoin Cash being heavily favored over Bitcoin.

Here are all the exchanges with KRW (no long tail here…)

This chart gives insight into why global volumes are larger for Ripple and Bitcoin Cash despite Ethereum having larger USD volume.

Chinese Yuan Volume per Coin

This is more consistent with USA volumes. Here are all the CNY transactions.

Notably low ZCash volume compared to USD and EUR (below). Also notably larger NEO volume.

Euro Volume per Coin

This look similar to USD. Note the x-axis scale is down by an order of magnitude e.g. the Bitcoin bar has ~70 million volume.

Bitcoin Volume with other Coins

This has the largest long tail, with even more unique coins seeing BTC liquidation than USD.

The x-axis ranges from O(1 billion) for Ripple to O(10 cents) for the bottom dwellers.

Thanks for reading!
