가상화폐 ICON은 진짜인가 가짜인가? (Is ICON legit?)
아래는 필자의 개인적인 의견일 뿐이며, 투자의견이 아니다. 아래에 대한 검증은 각자의 판단에 맡기겠다.

먼저 한때 4조 이상의 가치를 갖았던 ICON의 백서를 상세히 살펴보자.
Let’s first take a look at the whitepaper of ICON, which once had a valuation exceeding US$4bil.
다음은 ICON 백서의 일부를 발췌한 것이다.
Below in double quotations was quoted from the ICON’s whitepaper:
“The ICON Project (“ICON”, “ICON Network”, “we”, “our”, “us”) aims to overcome such challenges and help advance our society towards true hyperconnectivity.”
솔직히 나는 ICON 프로젝트로 블록체인 세계가 절대로 연결될 수 없다고 생각하고, ICON 프로젝트가 결코 성공할 가능성은 아주 희박하다고 본다.. 왜냐고? 일단 ICON이 그동안 해온 프로젝트를 검토해보자:
Real (painful) truth is that it would be almost impossible to ‘hyperconnect’ the blockchain network through ICON and that the possibility of ICON being a successful project is extremely low. Why? Let’s first take a look at the previous projects that they had worked on:
1. Identity Project (인증 프로젝트)
“‘Korea Financial Investment Blockchain Consortium,’ the first industry-wide blockchain consortium backed by 25 securities firms, is leading the innovation of domestic capital markets with loopchain, a blockchain technology developed by theloop.”
2. Insurance: insurance claims and payment process (보험 프로젝트)
The top-tiered life insurance company in Korea and major university hospitals are working together on a blockchain pilot project to incorporate theloop’s blockchain technology into the insurance claims and payment process.
3. University Coin: Payment system between universities?!? (대학 코인?!?)
“U-Coin (‘University-Coin’) is a cryptocurrency for university students in major universities in Korea. U-Coin will expand its ecosystem by creating other cryptocurrency-based services that can be used in nearby communities and university towns, including cryptocurrency vending machines and easy payment/transfer systems.”
4. Health Care: sharing medical information (의료정보)
Precision Medical Hospital Information System (P-HIS) is the largest Healthcare blockchain consortium in Korea, joined by major domestic hospitals, and loopchain will provide the underlying blockchain technology.
인증 프로젝트를 제외하고는 모두 개념증명에 불과해보이며, 서로 완전히 다른 개별 프로젝트들이다.
이들이 굳이 연결(hyperconnected) 될 필요가 있을까? 별로…
(ICON을 통해서) 연결될 수 있다는 조금의 가능성이라도 있는가? 거의 없다.
ICON 팀이 이들 커뮤니티를 연결하여 실제로 돌아가고 있음을 보여준 적 있는가? 없는 것 같다.
이들 커뮤니티가 실제로 연결되어 작동할 가능성이 최초에 있었는가? 거의 없었다.
앞으로 이들 커뮤니티가 실제로 연결되어 작동할까? 불가능에 가깝다고 얘기해주고 싶다.
With the exception of the identity project, all of them seem to be just Proof-of-Concepts, completely independent of each other.
Does each application need to be hyperconnected with each other? Not really.
Were there any meaningful evidence of possible hyperconnection? Not really.
Has the ICON team even tried to hyperconnect these communities and demonstrated that it really works in real life? Hmm I don’t think so.
Has it ever had a potential to hyperconnect the world? Pretty much no.
Will it ever get hyperconnected? I would say almost impossible.

생각해보자. 서로 전혀 다른 블록체인이 위에 언급된 것 처럼 연결되려면, 기본적으로 호환성(interoperability) 문제가 생긴다. ICON은 이 문제를 정말 쉽게 해결할 수 있다고 한다. 서로 다른 블록체인 커뮤니티 사이에서 이루어진 통신 프로토콜 그리고 합의 알고리즘만 있으면 된다는 것이다! 이렇게 쉽게 호환성 문제가 해결된다면 그들은 천재이거나 호환성 문제를 전혀 깊게 생각해본 적이 없는 것이다.
The main point about ICON is interconnecting the different blockchain network. And it talks very little about how ICON will achieve interoperability except that the nodes will communicate through a protocol called BTP(BlockchainTransmissionProtocol) and the consensus will be reached through Nexus and Portal. If interoperability problems get resolved through a simple communication protocol and consensus algorithm, then either they are real genius or haven’t really thought through the interoperability problem.
이것은 노터리(검증인)이라는 개념을 도입하여 각각의 커뮤니티를 대표하는 노드가 합의를 이뤄내는 방식이다. RAFT 기반의 합의알고리즘을 통해서 합의가 도출되는데 이 방식이 R3의 코다(Corda)의 방식과 매우 유사하다. 그대로 카피한 것인가? 아니면 참고만 한 것인가? 판단은 독자에 맡기겠다.
Above is how ICON achieves RAFT-based consensus via Notary. Is it just the coincidence or they completely copied the concept of Corda? See for yourself, and you be the judge.
“Community and ICON Republic are connected in real-time via DEX (Decentralized Exchange)”
이것은 또 무슨 소린가? 중간에 거래소가 있어서 서로 다른 코인들에 대한 환전을 해주겠다고?!? 어떤 진전이 있었으며 진행은 잘 되고 있는지 궁금하다(아니 사실은 그리 궁금하지 않다).
What!?! They will create an exchange to convert various coins??? I’m really curious what progress they have made so far..well not really.
지금까지의 진전사항이 궁금하다. DEX 개발은 잘 진행되고 있는지? DEX를 써야 하는 수요는 있었는지? 메인넷은 작동하고 있는지? 제대로 된 dApp들이 한개라도 만들어졌는지?
I would love to hear the updates on the above from the ICON team. Have you launched Mainnet that is successfully operating? Is DEX working at all? Was there even any demand to use DEX? Was there any meaningful dApps running on the ICON’splatform?
“Generally, the majority of blockchain projects place emphasis on their decentralization methodology and lack evidence of adoption in the real world”
“We discuss actual implementation with dozens of reputable institutions that are already in the ICON Network. This demonstrates our progress beyond the initial concept stage and validates our team’s strong execution ability; a major factor that differentiates ICON from the majority of blockchain projects today.”
ICON 팀은 현실세계에서 적용된 의미있는 (컨셈 이상의) 프로젝트가 없어서 ICON을 만들었다고 했다. 난 오히려 ICON 자체가 개념증명에 불과하다고 생각하고 도입이 되지 않은 단적인 예라고 생각한다. 도대체 이프로젝트는 누구를 위한 것인가?
ICON team said they created because “the majority of blockchain projects… lack evidence of adoption in the real world.” In my personal opinion, ICON IS the proof of “lacking evidence of adoption in the real world.” They themselves are just proof of concepts. Who was this project for?
결과적으로는 ICON팀과 자문 그리고 최초 투자자들이다. 여기서 한가지 물어보고 싶다. ICON의 ICO에 참여한 자문역들은 ICON에 내재된 다양한 리스크/문제점들에 대해서 충분한 검증과정을 거쳤는가? 그것이 아니라면 무엇 때문에 참여를 했고 자문으로서의 충분한 역할을 했다고 보는가? 그리고 ICO를 하고 보유한 코인을 팔고 떠난 직원들…그들을 투자자들은 어떻게 봐야 하는가? (https://icon.foundation/contents/team/members?lang=ko)
In essence, this project was largely for the ICON team itself, advisors, and early investors. Let me ask one question to its advisors. Have you thoroughly looked into the risk/issues that the ICON has? Otherwise, have you done your duty as an advisor? Also, how shall the investors see the employees who exited through ICO and subsequently left the company?
그렇다. 난 ICON에 대해서 아주 비판적이다. 위에 언급된 것들은 수많은 리스크 중에서 일부일 뿐이다. ICON 뿐만 아니라 다른 대부분의 ICO에도 비판적이다. 메디블록도 그 일 예이다 (왜냐구? 제 2탄을 기대하시라).
내가 전달하고자 하는 메세지는 단 하나다. ICO를 할 때에는 책임감 있게 행동하자. 잘못된 의도가 애초에 없더라도 이루기 힘든 헛된 망상을 팔겠다고 한 뒤에 나중에 안되면 할 수 없지 하는 행동은 보여주지 않았으면 좋겠다(ICON이 이런 모습을 보였다는 것은 아니다. 적어도 아직까지는.) 왜냐고? (기술을 잘 모르는) 투자자로부터 돈을 받았을테니까. 그들에게는 피땀 흘려 번 소중한 돈이다.
난 ICON 팀이 내가 틀렸음을 증명해주면 좋겠다. 하지만 난 그 가능성에 절대 베팅하지 않겠다.
That’s right. I’m not a big fan of ICON. What I mentioned above is just some of the potential risk of the ICON project. I’m actually not a fan of many other ICOs, either (one example is another Korean-made Mediblock to be explained in upcoming blogs).
What I’m trying to say is very simple. Be responsible when raising money through ICOs. Don’t be a guy who sold a “grand vision” that doesn’t even have a slim chance of becoming a reality and tell people that “sorry, we did our best but it didn’t work out.” Why? Because you took money from the investors, many of which were probably not so familiar with the technology. That money is as valuable to them as your money is to you.
I hope the ICON team proves me wrong. However, I will never bet my money on the possibility of ICON being a success.
