Formerly being Germany’s coal-mining region at the end of the 19th century, Bochum is the city known for its diverse cultural scene. The district known as the Ruhrgebiet, lies on the Ruhr river, bearing a name from it. Big mining and steel manufacturing buildings were closed in 1980, but the rich heritage vividly stands as a reminder, such as the German Mining Museum and Bochum Dahlhausen Railway Museum.

Bochum is full of interesting sites, museums, universities, planetarium and man-made lake on the river Ruhr for all sorts of outdoor activities. There are zoos with a diversity of the animal world and fossils samples, and for shopping enthusiasts, there are plenty of shopping malls and stores such as RuhrPark.

Even though there are numerous places to visit and you may not see them all, choose the ones that may be the most interesting Bochum sites:

1. German Mining Museum

The mining museum is one of the significant research grounds for history and technology of the industry, also the most extensive mining museum in the world. The headframe moved from the mine near Dortmund represents the essence of it, as well as a viewing platform at the peak.

There’s a lot to be seen here, such as massive mining equipment, 2.5 km underground tunnels that tend to present you the tough work of miners more closely from their perspective, an 18-ton briquette press originating from 1901, as well as 3.401-carat black diamond.

2. Bochum Dahlhausen Railway Museum

If you want to see a perfectly depicted timeline of German rail travel from the 1850s until now, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit this one either. Not many of its kind remained, but the museum contains locomotives that have been preserved until the 1960s along with many buildings that have been unaffected such as a crane, the water tower still functioning and 14-track roundhouse.
