In a bid to optimize delivery speed and improve customer satisfaction, Amazon is reportedly leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to minimize the distance between products and consumers, revolutionizing various aspects of its logistics operations.
Stefano Perego, Vice President of Customer Fulfillment and Global Operations Services for North America and Europe at Amazon, revealed in an interview with CNBC on May 15 that AI plays a pivotal role across multiple facets of the company’s operations. This includes utilizing AI-driven technologies for transportation, such as advanced mapping and route planning algorithms that take into account factors like weather conditions. Moreover, AI algorithms assist customers in swiftly finding their desired products during their search on Amazon’s platform.
To achieve its goal of regionalization, Amazon is prioritizing its initiative to deliver products to customers from nearby warehouses rather than distant locations. However, this ambitious endeavor necessitates cutting-edge technology capable of analyzing vast amounts of data and identifying patterns to predict product demand accurately and determine optimal inventory placement.
AI is a key enabler in this endeavor. By strategically positioning products closer to customers, Amazon can offer expedited shipping options, akin to its renowned Prime subscription service. Perego shared that the company’s endeavors in this area have yielded remarkable success, with more than 74% of customer orders in the United States being fulfilled from nearby distribution centers.
On April 13, Amazon made waves by introducing Bedrock, an AI model that empowers users of Amazon Web Services (AWS) to build advanced generative AI applications based on foundational models, unlocking new possibilities for AI development within the AWS ecosystem.
