Just for You

I saw it tonight:
the most beautiful
kind of life,
without wealth
or fame
or adoration,
just a wry smile
at the pavement
having done
one true thing,

having helped
a stranger be
who they were
always meant to be,
a green light,
blinking in the bay,
half-covered
with distance,
borne back by
ceaseless waves,

a lost star
like everyone else,
hoping
to light the dark
for a simple few,
no reward
but that gentle grin,
just enough
to breach
deep space

and keep this
world turning.
