What Does LGBTQIA+ Mean?
LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and the plus sign (+) which represents other identities within the community. This term is commonly used to refer to the diverse community of individuals who identify as non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender. However, understanding the meaning and history of LGBTQIA+ is crucial to support and advocate for this community.
The acronym has evolved over time, with the first known use of “LGBT” appearing in the 1980s, and “LGBTQ” in the 1990s. Today, the “+” represents the inclusivity of additional identities and is used to show that the community is continually growing and evolving. The letters in LGBTQIA+ represent different identities and concepts, each with its own unique meaning.
The LGBTQIA+ community has a rich history of activism and advocacy for equal rights. The Stonewall Riots in 1969 are considered the catalyst for the modern LGBTQIA+ movement, and since then, significant strides have been made towards equality and acceptance.
