In response to your VVVIP, very, very, very well said, umair. A portion of the young, lost generation media like to call “millennials” is looking at impact > profit as a career/life choice. They are now seeking for their purpose and passion more than means to put money into their bank account. With the ridiculous moto and meme called “YOLO,” they know money and jobs won’t last forever, but a life worth living is worth more than anything else.
This is a perfect reflection of the shift into this elevation economy you mentioned. Many corporations see that and respond with rebranding themselves into a more storytelling-focused entity to lure them back as employers and customers. It’s working very well, because these lost individuals lack the ability to stay focused on finding their true north in this noisy world. Leadership is not a way to manage. It is a mentality. It takes a lot of practice.
Evolution has wired us to follow the shortest shortcuts to accomplish our goals. It is our default setting to land in the choice of least resistance. It is what banded us together to form a civilization. It is what keeps most of us in a civilization and the desire for status quo even if we know it sucks. It is what keeps an obviously terrible president reelected in their second/third term. But that’s a tiny example.
It is simply part of human nature to do all the things that put us in stagnation and even backwards. Living the hard way is stupid, even if it is to elevate us. There are obvious reasons these default settings are there. They are what make us human.
What we tend to forget as humans is that what really make us human, is the ability to elevate. We live through experiences and learn from them. Some call it survival. Some call it growth. Here, we can call it elevation. Getting out of the default setting and looking at the world in different lenses is our gift. Letting our gift not go to waste is a choice we have in every second of our lives.
That’s the life worth living.
