There have been many song lyrics that have woven themselves in and out of my psyche throughout the course of my life but none that have resonated with me as much as You Can’t Always Get What You Want by The Rolling Stones.

You can’t always get what you want (3x)

But if you try sometimes

You just might find

You get what you need

When I was young, my sisters and I would spend the first few weeks of summer vacation with my grandparents in rural South Georgia. They were share croppers whose income was supplemented by government assisted grocery staples.

The protein source for meals was whatever my uncles could catch or shoot. No, I’ve never eaten possum (at least not that I know), but I have had squirrel and turtle.

My grandmother used everything she had to feed many mouths and she kept them satiated and satisfied. She never had many things but what she did have was a knowledge of how to make do with what she had. I learned, from her, how to appreciate that.

We so often live our lives wanting more, not always grateful for what we have. I’ve discovered that if I can let go the grasp, the universe will always provide.
