Adaptive systems, in general, are designed to bring out the very best faculties in individuals and groups. They also bridge the gaps between business and society. This is really, really important, especially for startups.

Really enjoying this article and your work elsewhere, Gunther! I must make a comment here, though. Complex adaptive systems (at least those with living parts) cannot be designed, they can only be ‘disturbed’. Hence the probe, sense, respond recommendation on recognition of the realm of the complex. The designed => disturbed or probed language is a small point, but important to me, as it echos the overall paradigm shift from mechanism (central design is possible) to holism (iterative design in response to system signals).
