I don’t have a problem with the female being in the lead — given how our societies are I think it is good to put the female forward (if for no other reason to poke at men insecure of their masculinity like some of the other posters to this article…).

But like yourself I started think of what a more ‘neutral’ way could this possibly be done. One possibility that I thought of is to use per-country/continent male/female balance (like this: http://www.geohive.com/earth/pop_gender.aspx )
