What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is an dynamic and lightweight object-oriented computer programming language that allows one to build interactive web content. More specifically, Javascript can calculate, manipulate, and validate data as well as update and change both the HTML and CSS of a webpage. With JavaScript you can build a vast number of powerful web applications.

Why you should be using JavaScript?

Well for one, JavaScript has been listed as the language most often requested of knowing by employers, surpassing the likes of Java and C++. JavaScript has become an essential piece of the web development technology stack, alongside HTML and CSS. So if you want to get into web development, learning JavaScript is must. JavaScript is a versatile technology that is used on both the front-end and back-end of web applications. JavaScript can also be used for mobile app development or even game development. For all these reasons and more that will discussed in this post and other following, JavaScript is an essential programming language for all developers to become versed in.

How to Get Started?

The first step to consider when beginning your development with JavaScript is installation. Depending on your operating system, your installation can go one of a few ways:

Installation on Windows

In order to effectively cover the installation and setup of JavaScript on Windows, we will include one of the most commonly used JavaScript IDE’s: Visual Studio Code by Microsoft.

Sample Program

After finishing all the required installations, you can now begin coding in JavaScript. The following shows how to run a simple program using JavaScript. This demonstration will be done in VS Code and requires the installation of Node js.

  1. Type ‘cd’ followed by filepath of the folder that contains your program
  2. Run your program by typing node followed by your file name

A package manager is a software tool that automates the installing, upgrading, configuring, and removing computer programs, in another words, package manager makes it easy to manage dependencies for your projects, and you will have no need to the installs and updates manually.
