Why you should never quit
Picture this; you have been training for an upcoming marathon that you have wanted to take part in for months. During the months leading up to the marathon you had a complete change of your diet, you have lost considerable weight and you have practiced every day pushing yourself beyond your limits in order to be ready for it; and you’re ready for it. The day of the marathon arrives, it’s a really hot day but you don’t mind that because this is the day you have been waiting for, for such a long time now. At the beginning of the race you’re energetic and you start to put in practice all you training you have done and it immediately pays off, you head straight to the front of the pack. But after 3 long tough hours, the marathons long course has taken its toll on you, and you are dead tired. Voices in your head are screaming for you to give up in order to ease the pain, your legs feel numb, you’re out of breath, and you feel like puking everything you have had over the months but most importantly you have 400m to go to the end of the race and with every step you take, it feels like torture. You’re still determined to finish the race though, but something unexpected happens on your last stretch, while dragging your feet you trip on a rock and your entire body tumbles down face flat to the ground and every bit of determination and energy you mustered up comes crushing down with you. Do you get up to finish the race or do you call it quits?
They are times in life when we are faced with such difficult situations and we can either choose to quit or choose to go on. Sometimes we feel like we have nothing left to give, and no matter how hard we try, we keep hitting road blocks that seem to hold us back. It is easier to give up than it is to keep going on. When we are faced with such a situation it is best to remember why we should not give up. Here are a few reasons why the words ‘give’ and ‘up’ should never be together:
“If you really believe in what you’re doing, work hard, take nothing personally and if something blocks one route, find another. Never give up.”- Laurie Notaro
Once you give up on something that you really wanted to do, a part of your self-confidence dies with that goal. Giving up something will always haunt you and will always make you feel miserable when you see other people achieve the same dream. You’ll start to think you just don’t have what it takes to achieve humongous goals. When you keep on through failure and achieve your goals your confidence will grow knowing you can achieve even the most challenging tasks.
You never know who is watching you. Your hard work and will to keep going could inspire someone else to start working towards their dreams. The best way to inspire others is through your own example, so maybe you have children, siblings or friends who are watching you. Show them they can go beyond their personal limits by going beyond yours.
Giving up becomes a habit. Giving up is easier than deciding to keep going on, and we usually lean on to the easier things in life. I remember when I was learning how to play the guitar, I’d play the easy chords in a song but when I got to the hard parts I’d always throw in the towel and move on to the next song. It was easier that way and it became a habit, so I ended up only knowing fragments of a particular song. That is still a bad habit I fight down to this day.
When we accomplish our ultimate goal after not giving up we become successful and with success come the feeling of happiness. We deserve to have the happiness and the success that comes with not giving up on our goals. Success is not rewarding if it is easy. If it wasn’t the hardest thing of our lives, then we didn’t achieve it. Knowing that we did everything we could for ourselves and others to earn that goal should be more rewarding than the actual honor itself.
Nobody can create an empire in a day; no business can become a multi-billion-dollar venture in one day, and no idea is worth throwing in the garbage if all the stops haven’t been pulled out yet. ‘Rome was not built in a day.’ Don’t give up because if you keep going on you’ll achieve great things.
“You learn from the things that happen in your career. You get up and down. You never give up. All the things that happened in my career, thank God it happened early rather than late in my career.”- Pablo Sandoval
If you give up you’ll never learn anything worthwhile. Every skill that is worth learning will be hard and will not be easy to learn. You only learn with study, time and a putting in a lot of practice. Read more, write more, know more and work harder than you did yesterday. Behind every successful person, there is a story and a long-fought journey for him or her to get to where he or she is today.
“Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. — Harriet Beecher Stowe Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.”- Harriet Beecher Stowe
You’re almost there and it will be such a waste if you give up now. It might still feel like you have a long way to go and it might be really tough now, but it can all instantly change. If you keep going at it you never know when you’ll hit a breakthrough. Don’t be like the person who dug a well 50m and gave up justifying that he was digging a dry well. And the person who came after him dug 1 m and hit water.
They are a lot of people out there who will tell you to give up and tell you what you’re trying to achieve is impossible because of their limiting beliefs. There will be times when you feel like all your efforts are in vain and it will be easier to give up instead. Always remember that it is ‘darkest before dawn’ and understand that the hardest trials are the ones that come right before the breakthrough. You’re on the verge of success. Keep Going!
