I agree with Catlin’s assessment that “ adolescent groups are expressing their literacy through more updated cultural forms”. We as teachers need to connect with our students in literacy that is MEANINGFUL to them. Standard text, even Shakespeare, will probably not be motivating to a today’s adolescent. I also agree with her position regarding NCLB-testing. This does not promote increased adolescent literacy.
