Title: Not a Very Wise Book!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2020
Review: āWatch out for intellect, because it knows so much it knows nothing
and leaves you hanging upside downā ā Anne Sexton
I believe I was doing relatively okay until I got to the chapter on values. This was possibly one of the most confusing things I have read in my life. They include absolute statements like:
values are set by religious beliefs, clubs etc
values give purpose
any need of the moment is a value
there are temporary values like aspirin or a poker card
the purpose of reality is to fuel myths, stories and beliefs which give value to life therefore it is up to us to create values
there are aesthetic values such as a scientistās aesthetic feelings that an explanation is too complex
there are positive values and negative values such as pain, discomfort, humiliation, hassle etc
the goal of negotiation is to accommodate as much of the other partyās values as possible
the explanations provided by the author would be funny if they were not so ridiculous.
I think the author may have his values mixed up so Iāll start by clarifying what values are.
First things first, values are not āneedsā. They are principles; the ethos and ethics that guide conduct.
Just because I place value of something, say a quilt, does not make it a āvalueā. It might be āvaluableā but it is not a value.
Secondly, he says āvalues give purposeā. My question is āhow so?ā
Making such a blanket statement without backing it up with proof is in poor taste.
Even if we choose to follow the bizarre logic that needs are values, if I have a āneedā for a child, then my purpose becomes to have a child, right? Wrong.
A āneedā does not always translate into āpurposeā. If you donāt believe me, ask all the āunwiseā people walking our streets today, they need wisdom but they donāt go around looking for it.
I believe āpurposeā is more likely to give us the right values than āvaluesā will give purpose.
the writer goes on to make some very bogus claims such as:
āIf young women were to down-value aggression and anti-social behavior then these types of behavior would soon go out of fashion in young menā
how in the world did you arrive at such a messed up conclusion? How about lions and tigers? How do we down-value their aggression? How about rape and sexual harassment? Could it be that these activities are highly-valued by ladies and thatās why itās still in fashion?
the concept of aesthetic values as used by the author would seem to refer to āopinionsā rather than any values at all. A scientistās āaesthetic feelingsā that an explanation is too complex is not a value, it is an opinion, and might well be an ignorant one for that matter.
I am struggling to understand what the writer means by āthe purpose of reality is to fuel the myths, stories and beliefs which give value to life.ā In essence, what he is saying is that life is not valuable by itself. It is our myths, stories and beliefs that give it value. What non sense!
Letās assume that you find a large sized diamond on your lawn and you donāt know itās a diamond. You think itās a large stone so you use it to line to your hedge. Does that make it less valuable than it really is? A thing is not valuable because you say it is. Value is inherent. Do our stories and myths give value to the sun? Are vegetables valuable because of our beliefs?
So where do values come from? No they donāt come from religion or clubs or pressure groups. we neither create values nor detract from them. Values are inherent in nature and finds expression when good is promoted. Thatās why technically ānegative valuesā cannot exist. From the moment we are born, good and evil compete for our attention ā You might have an unkind mother but you have a kind dog; you might have bullies for classmates but you have a loving teacher ā so you choose. At first you copy the values that are most prevalent around you but as you enter the age of reason, you choose.
the writer says pain, discomfort, death etc are negative values that we seek to avoid. It is such a ridiculous statement to make. Letās take pain. Pain is not a value, pain is a response. Discomfort is not a value, it is a state. Death is not a value, it is a consequence. And all these factors are neither good nor bad in themselves. Pain is often a signal that compels necessary action. How would we have heroes if there were no deaths?
These are only a few of the ridiculous arguments made by the author. I have neither the time nor space to go on. I feel like I wasted good money on this book. I think De Bono should have stayed with his thinking hats and not dabbled into the subject of wisdom because in trying to analyze it, he has turned wisdom on its head and has created an āabsurd cabbage.ā

Title: An insightful friendās soliloquy
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020
Review: This is a very unusual book, in terms of both format and content.
Positive attributes:
Very interesting, practical discussion of wisdom and lateral thinking, with emphasis on identifying possibilities and options rather than seeking āone correct answer.ā
Unusual format of 183 brief āchaptersā or intertwined thoughts, many of which are illustrated or amplified by simplistic āstick drawings.ā
Ideas and concepts are examined that are rarely addressed in a clear, effective manner in print.
The author states that this entire book was written very quickly, over the course of a few mornings. It has the feel of a one-sided conversation with an insightful friend, one who states an interesting observation, pauses for a sip of tea or a bite of food, and then continues with another observation that is somewhat related to the first. In essence, this book contains 183 such seemingly off-the-cuff comments.
The unusual format requires careful reading and periods of contemplation. You wouldnāt dream of trying to comprehend 183 observations made by a friend over the course of a couple of mornings. The book requires its reader to focus on a small number of individual observations, then pause and reflect on the value and relevance of these comments.
Critical comments:
103 of 253 pages, or ~41% of the book, are utilized to present stick drawings. About half of these drawings amplify or illuminate the accompanying text effectively. They add value to the presentation. About 25% of these drawings are so obvious in nature that they add little of value to the text. About 25% of these drawings are simply puzzling, at least to this reader. The message is simply unclear, and hence these drawings add little of value to the accompanying text.
Add in all the ample white space in this book, and ~50% of the total pages are devoted to either white space or simple drawings. The text accounts for only about half of the pages.
The introduction states that the author has written 83 books. Amazon lists as available only a small fraction of this number. Having read most of the commonly available books by this author, I find a great deal of overlap from one book to the next. I think it more accurate to state that he has written about 6 or 8 sets of interrelated information, and revised, recombined, restated, and reworked these 6 or 8 content sets into 83 books, some of which have been published and a few of which are commonly available.
This unusual, conversational format is not for everyone. For most readers, this is not the de Bono book that is the easiest to access. āLateral Thinkingā and āSix Thinking Hatsā seem to me to be more accessible; both deal with similar content, addressed with differing approaches.
The author makes the following statement on p. 129: āThe powerful Six Hats framework (see Six Thinking Hats, Penguin Life, 2013) was rapidly taken up by businesses around the worldā¦It also reduces meeting times by up to 75%.ā These are formidable statements in need of references. No such references are provided. Elsewhere throughout the book, virtually all references are to other books by the same author. Contributions by other authors are consistently criticized. One gets the erroneous impression that de Bono is the lone author to consider virtually all of the concepts outlined in this book.
Bottomline: an unusual, engaging, informal book full of intriguing ideas. Not necessarily the best introduction to the authorās work, but worthwhile nevertheless.
