Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I often have to remind myself of that fact. A rejected pitch can morph into something else, after all.

It's especially helpful when a rejection includes some feedback. I can remember one editor asked me for more focus on one aspect of an article, similar to what happened with your French invasion piece, and this changed the way I looked at the topic. I think that push and pull is a natural part of the process.
