Racism in Hip Hop
Obscure Words

Danielle, I think you made a great point about hip hop being a voice for those who are essentially voiceless in today's society. Hip Hop has been a means for artists to express what they are feeling, and what they want to say without actually “saying it.” I think people would take it differently if Ice Cube tweeted “made me wanna go out and pop me a cop” versus him voicing it in his song. Although hip hop is a means of expressing opposition to racism in some ways, I think the negative portrayal of blacks in hip hop adds a tad bit fuel to the fire of racism. If you haven’t already, you should check out Monica Acharya’s latest blog, “Discrimination Against African-Americans and Racism’s Relation to Hip Hop.”
