Summer Spotlight: Edward Hu
Meet Ed! Ed is a rising junior here at USC studying computer science and a developer for Code the Change. Keep reading to learn about his summer in Oregon, his favorite millennial indulgence, and more!

What have you been up to this summer?
I’m interning at Intel Smart Homes in Portland, Oregon. Smart homes will give us a lot of new data about exactly how we use our homes. I use machine learning to predict what the daily schedule of a homeowner is like and then automate the house based on those patterns.
As a side project, I’ve been working on a drug management app called Storyline, targeted at cancer patients who need to manage many drugs at once. It features computer vision for automatic input of drugs via their labels and FDA database integration to find side effects and other useful info. All this info is displayed in an intuitive timeline for the user to easily see their daily drug needs and overall drug history.
For fun, I’m playing around with music composition with algorithms. I plan to submit my music composition in for the Viterbi Algorithm Art contest later this fall!
Wow, that’s a lot! Have you learned anything new about yourself this summer?
Even though I like Pad Thai, I can’t eat it for four days straight.
What would you say your favorite millennial indulgence is?
I love Uber Eats. Now I don’t even need to leave my house. (Maybe that’s where all the Pad Thai is coming from!)
For our readers who are just finding out about CTC, tell us why you joined!
Code the Change is an organization with an awesome mission and awesome people. Since I joined, I’ve gotten the chance to work on high-impact projects that benefit the community with the smartest and friendliest people I know here at USC.
Any last thoughts for the readers?
Here’s a funny joke:
A SQL query goes into a bar, walks up to two tables and asks, “Can I join you?”
