Clueless (1995) - Dir. Amy Heckerling

Part of the Top 150 Films series

No, I’m not a cinematic virgin who can’t drive. Yes, Clueless is one of the best films ever made. Don’t agree with me? Whatever. I’ll be rolling with the homies who appreciate Heckerling’s thrilling updates to Jane Austen’s original prose, the gorgeously ‘happy’ cinematography, and the refreshing bonhomie all too rare in films about American teenagers (notwithstanding the need for the central character to constantly check her privilege). That Clueless ultimately sides with Cher’s outlook while castigating it on the sly is an amazing work of satire; that it’s so buoyant (like the balls flying at Amber’s nose), funny and persuasive - arguing its way from the C+ that most teen films aspire to at least an A - towards a scenario that could go horribly wrong is the icing on the cake (or the boa on a Calvin Klein dress). Still think Clueless is undeserving of its position here? As if.
