Online Curtain Shopping Tips
Curtains are multitaskers that can do so much for a room. They can bring drama or tranquility. They can filter sunlight, add a splash of colour, provide a focal point, ground a space or make a design cohesive. Basically, they can change the look and feel of any room. However, curtains are available in so many materials, prints, sizes, types and colours that it may be impossible to choose the right ones for your space.
Something that can make the task easier is shopping online, but even with so many possibilities conveniently laid before you, the choice can still be difficult. Fortunately, there are some ways to narrow down the options. Just let these top three considerations guide you: practicality, size and design.
Practicality
When shopping for curtains, your first consideration should always be the role you want your curtains to fill — what you want them to do. To help you choose the fabric and curtain type, consider your space and your space’s needs. For example, if you’re designing for your bedroom, you might consider block out curtains for privacy and noise reduction. On the other hand, if the curtains are for the living room or a similar space, you might consider thermal-backed or light filtering options, which can reduce glare, prevent direct sunlight on furnishings and provide insulation. Sheers and drapes are a consideration for a room that is more private and isn’t exposed to much sunlight or for when you want to soften a window.
Size
When looking to buy curtains online, their size should always be a major consideration. Curtains come in many traditional sizes, and choosing the right one for your space will require some accurate measurements. Getting accurate measurements requires grabbing a tape measure and taking measurements, starting from your curtain track, rod or pole.
For the length, measure from the top of the track to the bottom of the window sill or further if your desired length is beyond this point. This is a ‘drop’ measurement, which will be displayed in the description of every curtain you shop for online. For the width, measure from one end of the track to the other. If there are decorative pieces on the end of your rods or poles, exclude these from your measurements. When taking your measurements, consider any heaters, radiators or air vents below your windows, as your curtains shouldn’t cover those features.
Design
Generally, choosing any decorative item depends on your own personal style and the existing décor or design of your room. For a room that’s empty or simply a blank canvas, style-wise, window coverings are a good place to start. They can be the foundation of your design, helping you choose additional décor and furnishings. This means, there’ll be no limitations on the style of curtain you choose, and your curtains can be as whimsical, colourful or ‘print-heavy’ as you like.
On the other hand, if you’re simply updating your curtains, then you should draw inspiration from something in your room. For example, using the colour(s) of a sofa, area rug or bed linen to help you choose curtains with complementary tones or print.
