I support the point you are trying to make.

I actually think that this assumption that your are bringing up could stand to be restated as a false assumption.

Ie: Many people believe that data is information.

Fact: Data is not information, it is simply a collection of datum, data points from some established context.

My GIS professor was very careful to hammer this point home. Data is only Data, Data requires much context, care, analysis and thought to convert it to information. And Information is only as good as the model being used to work with the data and the data itself.
