We previously highlighted Shilajit’s role in the prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, but did you know this ancient superfood can help you deal with issues ranging from chronic fatigue syndrome to high-altitude exercise?

What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is an organic, sticky substance found in the lower Himalayan hills at altitudes between 1000 to 5000 meters in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, and Arunachal Pradesh. It is also found in Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, China, Tibet, and the former U.S.S.R..

Commonly used in ayurvedic medicine to health the body, Shilajit has long been known as the “Destroyer of Weakness.

Shilajit is composed of humus and organic plant materials that have been compressed by layers of rocks. It’s high in fulvic acid, which acts as a carrier molecule in the human system, helping in the transportation of nutrients into the deep tissues, and removes deep-seated toxins from the body.

Shilajit also contains more than 84 different minerals including copper, silver, zinc, iron, and lead in their ionic forms.

Health Benefits of Shilajit

Here are several different benefits of Shilajit, all cited with research studies:

  1. This study shows Shilajit amplifies the benefits of other herbs by enhancing their bioavailability in the body.
  2. This study shows that Shilajit can act as a “health rejuvenator” to people exercising at high altitudes.
  3. This study shows that Shilatji can help manage iron deficiency anemia.
  4. This study shows that the fulvic acid in Shilajit acts has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers.
  5. This study shows that Shilajit can help reduce symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

How to Get Shilajit

Shilajit comes in a number of forms, including resin extract and cold-pressed tablets.

Cultivate Elevate is an American company that provides Shilajit that is suspended in distilled water and purified. They don’t add preservatives to the product such as maltodextin, soy lecithin, or plasticizers. The company claims its shilajit resin extract is over 3,000 years old and is sourced from a remote region in the Altai Mountains.

Here’s a brief video in which I discuss Shilajit with Cultivate Elevate’s founder, Matt Roeske:
