Prepared to Worship
August 6 — 2 Chronicles 29:15–36
When the offerings were finished, the king and everyone present with him knelt down and worshipped. (2 Chronicles 29:29)
Earlier in 2 Chronicles 29, we saw how young King Hezekiah led the nation to return to God and, symbolic of this as well as practically preparing for worship, called for the repairing of the Temple. Those repairs completed, we now find the King and the people entering into worship. In 2 Chronicles 29:31 we read
Then Hezekiah said, “You have now dedicated yourselves to the LORD. Come and bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the temple of the LORD.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing brought burnt offerings.
The result of Hezekiah’s initiatives and the peoples’ response is recorded in 2 Chronicles 29:35b-36.
So the service of the temple of the LORD was reestablished. Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had brought about for his people, because it was done so quickly.
What we see here is a simple principle: preparation precedes praise. I am speaking here of praise in terms of worship. Before Hezekiah and the people entered the Temple for worship, there was preparation needed. First, the Temple needed to be repaired, then the people could worship. To see how this applies to us, consider Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 6:16.
What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Therefore, if we are the temple of the living God, then repairing the temple must begin within us, in our hearts. The same was true of the people in 2 Chronicles 29. Hezekiah declared this in verse 31 when he said, “You have now dedicated yourselves to the LORD.” They not only had to repair the structure of the Temple, they had to prepare their hearts, and then they could enter into worship.
How prepared are your to enter into worship? Are there repairs that need to be made? Have you dedicated yourself to the Lord? Make the necessary repairs and, with a clean heart and fully dedicated to the Lord, bow down and worship Him today.
