Day 97
I hung out with my boyfriend for most of the day. We watched another episode of Black Mirror and played more Diablo.
This episode was kind of a criticism of the role that television and technology play in society.
Television sensationalizes everything, and we find talent shows and whatnot entertaining even when it comes at the expense of whoever’s performing. Watching people get critically torn to pieces on TV is viewed as a sort of entertainment for the masses. And people often spend years working their asses off for the opportunity to perform once before such an audience as well.
It also spoke a lot about how badly women get objectified and the role that the porn industry plays in people’s everyday lives, in terms of the advertisements that people come across in random places on the internet.
The whole episode seemed almost 1984-esque, and what ultimately happened in the end makes me ambivalent about whether or not it could be considered a happy ending for the two (more major) characters involved. Both got to technically better positions in life, but one was forced to do things she might not have really wanted to do in the first place and the other became a very part of the system he so adamantly criticized.
I love how much this show illuminates the moral gray areas in society. It really makes you think a lot about your own views and beliefs and makes you question whether the people in the show make morally sound decisions.
I’ll probably watch a few more episodes on my own tonight.
Bye!
