Self-care is so important! The only way you can really truly make it through this pandemic is if you are your best self! For a lot of us that means keeping up on our appearance, giving us the confidence and sustainability we need for the rest of this quarantine.

But what do you do if your roots are showing and you’re not sure when you’ll be able to get back to the salon? Using the easy how-to guide below you’ll soon have exactly what you need to feel your best. We will have 10 tips here and several videos showing you exactly how to get your best look even in Quarantine. We’ll start by reviewing how to pick a box color with tips from professionals, the move on to the best way to apply it.

1. Don’t believe the color on the box! Just because it looks like it might do well for someone with similar hair Color does not mean it will work the best for you. If you’re unsure or have not used this exact brand and color before you want to do a test.

2. Choosing the right color is important. But how do you know which color to choose? If you’re choosing permanent dye use a color one or two shades darker than what you would do to the strength of the developing formula. If you are not using permit dye it’s best to go one or two shades lighter.

Consider the Texture of your hair too:

“Coarse, curly, frizzy, or unruly hair sucks up color faster and will become cooler-toned when you dye it, so it will look ashier, or slightly bluish,” says Ionato. “Fine to medium hair textures don’t absorb color as easily and will become a slightly warmer tone when you add dye, meaning it will have orange, red, or copper undertones.”

So what does that mean for you when you’re standing in the aisle at the drugstore? If your hair is frizzy or curly, pick a color that’s warm (golden, copper, bronze), but a little lighter than your natural hair color; if your hair is fine and straight, choose cooler shades (champagne, beige) that are slightly darker than your natural color. 3. Two boxes just to be on the safe side. There’s nothing worse than getting halfway through a die job and realize you don’t have enough coloring for the rest of your head!

4. Don’t regret it! Be sure to do a strand test first if you have not used The box brand or coloring before. Make sure that your hair is dry for at least 24 hours before dying.

5.Set up at a sink with a mirror, dropcloth on the floor and something to cover any surfaces you don’t want dye on. A part of my set up is to place a dark cloth or towel on the floor and a covering for the sink. Then I wear long sleeves and or a turtleneck to keep any dye from touching my skin. Permanent dye often has ammonia or a strong chemical that can burn the skin.

Supplies:

You’ll also want rubber or plastic gloves, a comb, plastic bowl, mixing brush or bottle with a narrow end if it does not come in your coloring kit.

6. Next, I comb through my hair and make sure it is free of tangles. Divided into four even sections and tie it back with a hair tie, scrunchi, or Barrett.

7. Cover the exposed skin on the forehead and ears and neck. I use coconut oil to keep any die from seeping into the skin.

Pro Tip: keep some cleaning soap and paper towels handy (even dish soap works) to immediately clean up any messes. Be sure to remove your gloves first.

8. Applying the Dye -If you’re doing an overall color Simply start from just before the roots touch your scalp and evenly apply die throughout the hair. If you are just touching up the roots only apply the dye to the hair growth. If you are highlighting be sure to start at the front and working way back through the crown in small sections roughly quarter-inch pieces of hair and apply the coloring. Alternate the sections of hair you color to make sure that the highlights are even throughout. So, for example, highlight one strand of hair and skip the next one or two. Adding dying to every other section. The nice thing is you don’t have to be very even so that the highlights are more natural-looking.

9.Set and check the coloring progress. Once you’re done wrap your hair in a towel while you wait. This will help prevent dye from rubbing off on surfaces you don’t want it on. Leave the dye on for the recommended time on the box. If you aren’t sure of the time needed for your hair, choose a strand that is not easily seen and rinse 5 to 10 minutes early to see if this is the color you want.

10. Next, Thoroughly rinse your hair and apply the conditioner. Don’t forget to check for stray droplets you want to clean up immediately. Finally, rinse the conditioner out after a few minutes, then dry and set your hair.

Bonus tip if your hair is too dark wash it immediately with color friendly shampoo. However, if it’s too light get a shade darker and re-color your hair.

If your hair and so I’ve been too brassy looking you can add toner and wash with a lavender Hugh shampoo to balance out the brassy look.

For any extreme color look for the opposite color to balance it out.
