K League 1 under Yeom Ki-hoon, manager of Suwon Samsung
Suwon Samsung, a professional soccer team that was demoted to K League 2 (second division) for the first time since its foundation, appointed Yeom Ki-hoon as its ninth head coach.
Suwon announced on the 9th, “We have decided to leave the mission of re-entry to the K League 1 to head coach Yeom Ki-hoon,” adding, “The contract period is two years.”
The club expected, “Coach Yeom, who is well aware of the problems of the team and has the will and ability to solve them, will contribute to the normalization of the team.”
Suwon decided on the condition of the new coach ▲ overcoming a sense of defeat, presenting and carrying out new goals ▲ promoting team reform without confusion ▲ preventing the departure of key players ▲ implementing the club’s long-term development plan, and reviewed multiple managerial candidates.
The club explained, “As a result of a thorough review, we judged that manager Yeom was the right person to reunite the team and return Suwon to K League 1.”
“I will run toward the goal of re-entry to the K League 1 with a heavy responsibility,” manager Yeom said, expressing his determination, “It is a difficult situation in many ways, but I will definitely leap forward again as long as there are fans.”
Suwon will give coach Yeom Ki-hoon full authority over appointment of coaching and support staff. Afterwards, the team plans to establish intensive reform plans to accelerate improvement of the team’s constitution.
Suwon replaced Kim Byung-soo in September last year, and appointed Yeom Ki-hoon, who served as the legendary playing coach for Suwon for 14 years, as its acting coach. However, Suwon remained at the bottom of the K-League 1 and was demoted to the K-League 2 for the first time in 28 years since its foundation in 1995.
Suwon’s squad was convened and trained on the 4th of this month and is scheduled to hold its first off-season training in Bangkok, Thailand from the 12th to the 29th.
