Cycle Canton is lucky to have hosted over 5,000 guests and share our passion for Guangzhou! Unfortunately our guided cycle tours only last for four hours so we cannot cover all highlights. We therefore developed the Cycle Canton Map of Guangzhou and share our other favourite places to explore, eat and drink in this amazing city. These recommendations are by no means a comprehensive guide; these are just our favourite places :)

01. Pearl river cruise 珠江夜

See the city pass by from the water. Buy tickets at the Dashatou wharf and take a cruise past Ersha Island and Zhujiang New Town. Most interesting at night when Zhujiang New Town is lit up quite spectacularly. Alternatively you can take a cruise past the old town that departs from the Canton Bund. Tickets can be bought at a booth along the river, just east of Shamian island

02. Guangzhou Ferry 珠江渡轮

Take a river cruise the way locals do: on the Guangzhou ferry! You can cross the heart of the city on a ferry. It links up many of our recommended sights so is worth of a (half) day trip. Stops are at Fangcun (芳村), Huangsha fish market (黄沙), Xidi (Canton Bund, 西堤), Tianzi Wharf (天字), Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen’s Mansion (大元帅府), Sun Yat-sen University (中大) and Canton Tower (广州塔).

03. Lizhiwanchong canal 荔枝湾

Greenway and canal winding through the old town; a bit tacky but links up many interesting sights. It’s continuously being extended and provides a cool walk through old town. Walk in southwestern direction from the point on the map and follow the canal from here

04. Temple of Six Banyan Trees 六榕寺

Get in touch with your inner Zen and climb the pagoda for a nice view. There’s a mosque nearby that’s worth visiting as well

05. Guangzhou Library 广州图书馆

Astonishing architecture with interesting designs from different angles. The front entrance is designed to resemble an opened book standing up. Free entry

06. Guangdong Museum 广东省博物馆

Stunning building, made to resemble a jewellery box: pretty on the outside and holding treasures on the inside. The section on Chaozhou wood carving shows astonishing craftsmanship. Has a history of Guangzhou section with dinosaurs. Free entry, but need to bring passport

07. Baiyun Mountain 白云山风景区

Beautiful view and fresh air; can be reached by cable car or hiking trail; on top there is a 45m bungee (means ‘stupid pig’ in Cantonese) jump for only 240RMB

08. Dongshankou 东山口

Historic heritage area with beautiful buildings and small streets. Especially the areas around Xuguyuan Lu (侐孤院路) are stunning. Walk around, look up at the buildings, have a coffee (Kuiyuan Gallery!) and consider a stroll through Donghu Park to finish it off. There’s also a wet market worth visiting on Guigang Damalu (龟岗大马路)

9. Huangsha 黄沙水产市场

Southern China’s largest fresh seafood market. Every kind of sea and river life is sold alive here. On top of that there is crocodile, turtle, snake, frog and the like. Frenzy of hustlers and boatmen transporting goods around. You can buy your seafood downstairs and have it cooked in some restaurants upstairs. Be weary of scams and ready for wet feet

10. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall 中山纪念堂

Built right after Sun-yat Sen’s death and a symbol of Communist Party and Kuomintang cooperation. Used for concerts and plays. For a small fee you can look inside. It’s very close to other sights such as the Yuexiu Park and Yuexiu Shan football stadium, Temple of Six Banyan Trees and People’s Park. You can also rent a bike at exit D1 of the metro station outside

11. Huangpu Gugang 黄埔古港

Former port of Guangzhou; small museum, restored houses and outdoor market with local delicacies. You can take a small boat for a tour

12. Peasant Movement Institute 农讲所

Former academy of revolutionaries, housed in a 13th century temple. Co-founded by the Communist Party and Kuomintang and the place where a young Mao Zedong taught students and started his revolution. His room and class room are rebuilt and you can see where he lived and taught from 1922–1926.

13. Tianhe Sports Stadium 天河体育中心

Home of Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao FC, Chinese football champion and winner of the Asian Champions League in 2013 and 2015. Recent coaches include world-acclaimed Felipe Scolari (current), Fabio Cannavaro and Marcello Lippi. Buy tickets from touts outside or book a room in the Westin Hotel overlooking the south for a free view. At night the plaza outside the stadium fills up with people square-dancing and playing badminton.

14. Nanfang Theater 南方剧院

The place to experience Cantonese opera, ballet and acrobatics since 1937. Find your way upstairs if you feel like a cinema, KTV karaoke or disco. Call 020 83352871 for more info

15. Opera House 大剧院

Gigantic structure designed by world-acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid. Locals describe it as the tortoise walking to the river. Both exterior and interior designs are spectacular and the Opera House hosts Guangzhou’s best performances

16. Guangdong Museum of Art 广东美术馆

Changing exhibitions, often quite interesting, with a sculpture garden. Check their website for what’s on. Combine with a leisurely stroll along Ersha island’s boulevard or a picknick in Ersha island’s park, the only one where you can walk and sit on the grass!

17. Redtory 红砖厂

Former industrial area turned into a mash-up artist space and tourist site. Cool exhibitions, a book store, the best tourist shop, some good restaurants and an interesting walk. Check their website for what’s on

18. Xiaozhou village 小洲村

Cool, laid-back artist village with small canals, an ancestral hall, (coffee) shops and some nice old buildings. On weekends there are many vendors selling local snacks. Xiaozhou is being gentrified heavily so can come across as tacky in places.

19. Cathedral of Notre Dame 石室

Built by the French in 1863 and was Guangzhou’s tallest building for a long time. Now it’s tucked away in between urban villages and wholesale markets. Check Yide Lu for dried seafood

20. Vitamin Creative Space 维他命艺术空间

Unique and beautiful art gallery with changing exhibitions with a garden and in a rural setting. The place itself is already worth a visit. Check their website to see what’s on. Inside the Four seas horse track (四海马术). Come by car or take a metro (Xinzao station, green line 4) and jump on the back of a motorbike from there.

21. Yuexiu Mountain Stadium 越秀山体育场

Beautiful 65 year old stadium, for the most part built into Yuexiu Mountain. Now hosts Guangzhou R&F, the city’s second football team. If you ask nicely they’ll let you enter the stadium and you can walk around pretending you’re a Chinese football star!

22. Haizhuang Buddhist Temple 海幢寺

Beautiful old Buddhist temple with lots of Buddha statues, gold, ponds and mango trees in their large garden. Nice place to hang around and explore the alleyways of Nanhuaxi all around the temple.

23. Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen’s Mansion 大元帅府

The Sun Yat-sen mansion was formerly one of China’s largest cement factories. After going bankrupt the owner donated the mansion to Sun Yat-sen who used it as a training ground for his army that went to overthrow the Qing dynasty. It then served as China’s President’s residence, much like the White House, but then yellow. The beautiful yellow building now hosts a museum displaying the life of Sun Yat-sen, the revolution and imagery of old Guangzhou

24. Chen Clan Academy Ancestral Hall 陈家祠

19th century ancestral hall of the Chen family. Now a place to learn about Lingnan, southern Chinese art, such as calligraphy and porcelain painting. Join in the square dancing that occurs at the square in front at night

25. Sky Drop@Canton Tower 极速云霄@广州塔

There’s no better place to enjoy a view of Guangzhou than doing the Sky Drop on the Canton Tower, the tallest building in the world when it opened in 2010. 26. Xiancun 冼村

Half-destroyed and soon-to-be-destructed urban village surrounded by modern skyscrapers. Some streets have been completely deserted while others are full of life with vibrant outdoor markets. Surreal juxtapositions with the gleaming skyscrapers in the backdrop. Be vigilant when visiting, especially at night

31. Canton Bund

Beautiful heritage buildings along the Pearl river with centuries of historical significance. Walk from Shamian island to Guangzhou’s ‘Flat Iron building’ and take in the buildings on your left hand. You can take the ferry to enrich the experience

32. Beijing Lu 北京路

Very busy shopping street with local brands, busy restaurants and street food. Several great restaurants are to be found in the area. Dive into the beautiful alleyways on all sides of Beijing Lu. The street was always named Guangzhou Lu but changed into Beijing Lu when the Communist Party took power. A sign of showing who’s the boss…

33. Liuyun Xiaoqu neighborhood 六运小区

Green and quiet pedestrian area with hip, boutique shops, bars and restaurants. Great place to meet a friend, go for a coffee or find something special to wear. Try Laihui Coffee (来回咖啡 ）！

35. Beiyuan 北园

Old-time favourite dim sum restaurant inside a beautiful Chinese mansion with fish pond. Check out the Yuexiu park and a rebuilt section of the old city wall across the street and the restored Donghaochong greenway canal at the back of the restaurant。

Arguably best canteen-style Cantonese restaurant. Roasted goose and dim sum are some of the best dishes. Wuus is open until 3am but long waiting lines are common

Beautiful floating restaurant inside Liwan Lake Park. The floating rooms are inspired by the ‘drinking and whoring boats’ that were docked at the Pearl river during the Qing dynasty. Their roasted pigeon is divine!

The hotel above hosts the governor of Heilongjiang province in northeastern China, when he visits Guangzhou. He eats at this restaurant, so it must be (and is!) Guangzhou’s best place for northeastern food. Have the dumplings, lamb and some potato dishes; this Chinese cuisine comes closest to Western
