Gone with the wind is a unique work of literature. It provides a humane insight into the lives of the southerners, having Scarlet O´Hara in the center of it all. Through the book it can be seen the evolution of the character: spoiled and conceited, her selfish desires ruling every step on her way, Scarlet represents the naked will to adapt. While other southerners were enslaved to memories and standards of a society gone with the war, she withstood all obstacles and embraced the challenges of a new era. Her survival instinct allowed her to support herself and her closed ones in a starving, devastating, self-destructing post-war society. She embodies the typical survivor, in this case, someone who was able to transition from aristocracy to a reconstruction era full of social, legal, economic and political changes.
