Skeptical White Male

You say that white individuals need to challenge their own biases and privilege and actively work towards dismantling systems of power and privilege.

I don’t have anything close to the power and influence to dismantle anything. The only thing I’m trying to dismantle is the mental illness that wreaks havoc on my brain and I’m doing a poor job at that no matter how much I try.

Privilege. I’m on disability. I don’t have to work. Thank you, Lord. I sit around and drink beer and watch sports and crime shows. I will not challenge that because this sort of privilege is not something I’m willing to give up.

Health insurance. I’m on Medicare. Great insurance. Super privilege. I feel bad that there are a ton of people who are uninsured. I wish I could change that but I can’t.

I have a roof over my head. I have air conditioning and heat. Clean water. My neighborhood is violence free. Privilege times a million.

Transportation. I don’t have a car. Who cares? Most people on this planet don’t have a car. The bus system in my city is fine.

I spent $7 today on scratch offs and a lotto ticket. Yes, I could have donated that money to organizations that help to correct the racial imbalances that exist in this country. But, in my crazy mind, what sense does that make? If I win the lottery, I can donate a million times more money than the $7 I spent on the lottery.

People who point the finger at white people for the problems of the world and how they should go about correcting it should look in the mirror at their own privileges and realize that the problems plaguing the world are also created by non-white people. I’m not calling you out, in particularly, because you seem like a good guy. It’s just a generalization on my part based on numerous articles on privilege on Medium.
