JOUR 590: Multimedia Storytelling
Hi all —
I wanted to make sure you have the chance to view Prof. Al Steele’s full Overby Center presentation — we got a great glimpse of her work yesterday, but two of her subjects were there to speak for themselves and answer questions. I urge you to watch it all the way through:
If you’d like to contact her for any reason, she’s at <alysia@olemiss.edu>
The final version of your individual projects are due before class time next Wednesday. Please email me the link to the story before 1PM on Wednesday.
I have attached via email the rubric by which these projects are assessed — please refer to this as a ‘quality checklist’ for your story. (Obviously not all categories will apply to all projects — not everyone is using video, for instance)
The requirements once again:
Stories will have a primary element – whether text, video, or audio slideshow – as well as **TWO** other formats (PLEASE NOTE- THIS IS AMENDED FROM EARLIER VERSION, WHICH REQUIRED THREE ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS — YOU SHOULD HAVE THREE ELEMENTS TOTAL), which may include any combination of the following: social media aggregation, audio clips, photo stills, photo slideshows, video clips and/or full package, timelines, graphic illustrations, maps.
Story length will be dictated somewhat by the blend of elements, but some general rules of thumb:
If TEXT is the primary element, stories should be a minimum of 1500 words.
If VIDEO is the primary element, length should be approx. 3–5 minutes.
If PHOTOS/AUDIO are primary element, length should also be approx.. 3–5 min.
We will continue the discussion about different approaches to profiling next week — please view in their entirety the following videos about Phiona Mutesi, who was profiled in ESPN’s story, “The Game of her Life”:
Please pay particular attention to the specific similarities and differences between each, being mindful of
— ‘soundbite’ or quote selection
—use of ambient sound
—narration (tracked voiceover)
—shot selection/variety
—story sequence (how does each start/unfold/end?)
