Applying to internships / jobs

Another long post, got some ‘trade secrets’ related to internships to reveal here.

The value of internships

Internships are important, very important. Majority undergraduate students (except Tier I-II engineering, medic students) are not encouraged to do internship as if its reserved for masters students. For MBA students its mandatory to do internships, cause there are stupid students who won’t even in their masters.

You need to understand some things.

You need to do internships. Just because its not mandatory for us (B.Com/BBA) or B.A students THAT DOESN’T MEAN WE (TO START OUR CAREER) DON’T REQUIRE IT. Our education system only values tier I-II undergraduate engineering students, their students are not only informed by themselves about the value of internships, exchange programs, participation in extra-curricular events but also encouraged by their institutions. Rest of us have to go through slow start to our career starting from a office janitor, customer service executive (fancy name for call center caller) earning pennies and then rely back on our parents’ net worth to fund our masters.

I don’t understand why rest of the us (B.Com/BBA/B.A students) don’t consider internship virtually mandatory to have any value of our bachelors. You need to understand: bachelor has equal value to masters. Our bachelor has equal value to engineering bachelor. We are equal on paper, but if our students don’t do the rest of the stuff apart from attending semester exams then we’re going to be left behind. And that's whats happening. Large unemployable graduates is the outcome.

Now you tell me, do you want a slow start to you career? do you think your university semester marks is enough? even if you top, do you know how many thousands of universities are there? each with their affiliated colleges, each affiliate college having toppers-semester topper, section topper etc etc topper. You will be one of them. We are a nation of billion people. Why should now the recruiter of a top company select you? what more do you offer? what separates your bachelor BBA degree? Understood?. Now you tell me, why didn’t you took the internship at IDBI that I offered you!? What was so important in the holidays? I went all the way to Tamil Nadu do it while your offer was in Guwahati, their office was in Christian Basti. Attendance? F**k attendance!, DO YOU THINK SOME GODDAMN RECRUITER IS GOING TO LOOK AT YOUR FINAL ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATE (IF SUCH THING EXIST) AND SAY “WOW LAGTA HE YE CHAMMCHA TO HAMESHA OFFICE AYEGA, ISKO JOB TOH JARUR MILEGA” ? Don’t be so faithful to your college, you have to make your own career, they are not going to get it for you. If they don't encourage internship that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. This 75% minimum attendance regulation is a very Indian thing, its not in sight in rest of the world education. Therefore, a lot of people are fighting to remove this policy of Indian universities in court. Let the student guide their own career.

Hope I have given you enough motivation to do internship. Lets, head to applying.

Not all internship programs have equal value

  1. NGO internships are useless. Their work profiles are irrelevant to our courses and would add no value. Not sure why some of our pals, specially those currently studying B.A in some Delhi university college come back home to do some apparent ‘internship’ in NGOs during holidays.
  2. Second most useless internships are in these youth organizations. North Eastern Chronicle, Around Guwahati, Grapevine etc. Work in their events and add them under ‘Leadership’ section in CV but don’t waste time there in official position of an Intern. Its not going to add any value to your CV unless of-course you want to work in content writing and event management in future (average pay of content writers is ~7K/month btw)
  3. Campus Ambassador/ Data Entry programs are valueless.

LinkedIn- the site for everything

I saved the best website for the last. Its Linkedin.com

LinkedIn is a professional social network full of working professionals and entrepreneurs. It also has job search feature.

Here is my profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ibaruah/ . Its time you set up your own profile. Use my profile for reference and what information to add and ignore. Keep it professional.

LinkedIn is useful to searching for jobs and internships in India and abroad. You will need it for your whole career.

  1. https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/search/?f_E=1&keywords=Intern&locationId=in%3A0 . Search for internships here. Change the location as per your requirements.
  2. Many companies list their internship programs directly here. You can also find internships curated from internshala and other sites
  3. Its great website to find opportunities abroad, just change the location. Explore the site more I believe.

Applying on companies career website

This is the secret. The thing is, most large companies like Tech- Google, Amazon, Audit- KPMG, PwC, Consultancy- Deloitte, Investment Banks- Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, etc etc do not list their opportunities in any website other than their own career website.

Career websites: You will notice all company website have a section called ‘Careers’. These career sites also list internships opportunities. So candidates have to go through each and every website of company and apply on each one after finding a internship programs.

Internship programs

Most international companies run flagship internship programs. Of-course theses are very hard to get it. These are called-

  1. Summer Internship/ Summer Analyst: Usually these are 2–3 months long. Starts around June to Sept. Though these programs are in summer, the application process opens the year before around August and ends by November end. So if you’re looking for summer internship for summer 2019. You’ll have to apply on their career website on the internship program by end of November 2018!
  2. Off Cycle Internship: These maybe be 2 months to 1 year long programs.
  3. Summer Associate: Its important to remember the difference between summer associate and analyst. Analyst programs are for bachelors and associate programs are only eligible for master students.

All of these careers website employ recruiting softwares like myworkdayjobs, Taleo, tal.net etc. If you don’t understand no problem, just remember you’ll have to get used to applying through career websites for the rest of your career.

List of career website of financial companies

These are companies which I had applied to. 90% of these are finance based- consultancy, investment banks, hedge funds because that’s my interest. But you can search in other sector companies too.

VERY IMPORTANT: Always apply to programs in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Shanghai, Japan, Korea if programs are not available in India. Most of these companies will hopefully sponsor VISA.
